Contains recipes for making different kinds of varnishes, glues, cements, dyes, colored paints, as well as for various edibles and drinkables, including wines, vinegars, liquors, essential oils, and confectioneries. Emblematic of the early national effort to promote American domestic manufactures. Denoted the "Third American Edition" of an English translation of Secrets Concernant les Arts et Metiers, published originally in London in 1775. ESTC records a Norwich, Connecticut, edition in 1795, but no other North American printing that would serve as the other precedent. ESTC locates fifteen copies. ESTC W28501. EVANS 34913. RINK 157. 12mo. Contemporary calf, rebacked, gilt spine label. Scattered and significant browning and foxing to text, occasional marginal nicks, short tears and chips, a few scattered light stains. Section of fore-edge torn away on pages 155-56, affecting three lines of text with loss to a few letters. Ink gift inscription on somewhat stained blank prelim ("A Gift of the revnd. Waltr.
