Condizione: Sehr gut. Original softcover binding, 126 pages, numerous illustrations, very good condition. Excellen dealer`s catalogue of a sales exhibition, which took place from Monday 15th November to Tuesday 30th November 1999. Offered were i.a. a very early Manjushri statue from Kashmir, a wonderful Densatil gilt bronze of Acala, a very large wook portrait of a lama of the Kagyu school, a very curious writing set from Tibet with Englishmen on horses and some early rugs. Also on offer was a sculpture of "Lama Lobpai Dorje", Central Tibet, 15th century, cat. no. 27. This catalogue is Spink`s largest Tibet catalogue with huge photos of the objects, other then the others in the series the objects are not described, so there is no information, how this identification is justified. This statue was actually subsequently sold by Christies, New York, in their sale 9474 on 20th September 2000, lot 65 (realising USD 23,500), we have not seen it since then. However, it was not the first publication, Ulrich von Schroeder made a photo of it in 1996, when it was still in Lhasa, part of the collection of the main temple there, the Tsuglakhang, where it had the inventory no. 602[A]. von Schroeder identified the sculpture as Mahapandita (without exactly identifying it; Christies followed this, mentioning that it has no inscription and defies exact identification, speculating that it shows one of the great scholar sages of Indian Buddhism, such as Aryadeva, Dignaga, Gunaprabha, or Buddhapalita). Excellent sales catalogue, Leonov joined Spinks previously before from St Petersburg`s Eremitage Museum, where he was curator of the Tibetan collection. Spink published only a few cataloges on the art of Tibet in the 1990ies, this is probably the most important. It features i.a. a 11th century Padmapani statue in Pala style with a height of 127 cm - one of the largest figures of this age in the West. Also sculpture from Densatil, i.a. a plaque with 4 goddesses and a marvellous Mahapratisara (one of the 5 Pancaraksha goddesses). 3 early ivory sculptures, although quite small, of the finest quality, at least one from Yuan China in the Khara Khoto style. Last not least a collection of 288 photographs taken by Henry Martin who helped to built the telegraph line from India to Gyantse in 1908, which are unpublished in their majority - 11 at least are published in this catalogue, judging from them they are of excellent quality, fitting to the art in this catalogue. The first catalogue of Ashencaen/Leonov during their time at Spink`s, already with several excellent pieces. I.a. a very interesting statue of Nairatma, an unusual stone sculpture of Milarepa, a fine, silver inlaid Lama portrait or a small, but very charming Thangka of Buddha, 14th century, described as Western Tibet, looking for us more Southern Tibet. Spink published only a few cataloges on the art of Tibet in the 1990ies. It features i.a. a 10th century Shakyamuni statue from Kashmir (GBP 20,000), a 13th century statue of Ushnishavijaya inlaid with silver from central Tibet (GBP 47,000), a 4 goddesses panel from Densatil (sold already at the time the price list was printed), a large 16th century Shakyamuni from Tibet (or maybe rather China ?; GBP 45,000), a trinity of lacquered wood statues from Qianlong dynasty (GBP 20,000), an impressive, 63 cm high Cakrasamvara, Tibet 17th century (GBP 85,000; resold by Christies, New York, 23. September 2004, lot 135, now 69,9 cm, ca. 1700, for USD 209,100) and a huge Tara statue, Tibet (or China ?) 17-18th century, 104 cm (GBP 90,000), as well as several good Thangkas, book covers and ritual instruments.
