Soft cover. Condizione: Good. First edition thus. Hutchinson's first post-WWI book and the dominant title in his somewhat controversial writing career. His books tended to be ahead of their time in their unwavering depiction of social realities and snubbing of conventional proprieties - leading to a shock value that, on the whole, displeased the critics but thrilled the reading public. This is the book that really underlined that reputation. Adapted into movies on two occasions - 1923 and 1947. First published in 1921 (note: the copyright declaration in this book is a typo in giving it as 1912!) this became the author's best known and best selling book, going into many reprints in the U.S. within a couple of months of it's August 1921 publication. This is a reissue from Little, Brown, and Company in an attractive Pocket Edition series. The soft covers are in burgundy leather with elaborate gilt tooling on spine. Illustrated endpapers. There is some wear to the extremities of this pretty good copy, particularly one top corner, and the spine is quite worn and a little faded. The leather generally shows some light scratching. Edges and endpapers are slightly browned. Nice, good plus copy. And, by the way, I have left untouched a good omen (if you believe in that sort of thing) laid in at page 257.
