Hardcover. Condizione: New. This book makes a comprehensive study of development in North East India focusing on the Autonomous District Council (ADC) areas of Meghalaya under the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India. Spread over five chapters, this book begins with a larger perspective of colonial anthropology that justified the rule of difference in North East India and related the rule of difference with the colonial modality of development which drained out the incredible resources from this region. After transfer of power, territorial autonomy for the tribes of Assam, not their development, engaged the state builders and the regional leaders. In this light, this book tracks the roadmap of the Autonomous District Council under the Sixth Schedule in Meghalaya and makes critical reflections upon the developmental functions of the institution. This book then re-examines the developmental role of ADC under market economy which found a new geography of opportunity in the ADC areas of Meghalaya and unveils the emerging challenges of development and social opportunity of the people living in the ADC areas of Meghalaya.

The versions and standpoints on violation of human rights are highly polarized. The two parties (the terrorists and the state) blame each other for such violation. The overall terrorist scenario let loose both by the militants and by the army has stalled the civic life of millions of people in this region. The casualties happen with the civilians militants as well as with the army personnel. Terrorism let loose by the terrorists and the arm forces has also exposed serious democratic deficit leading to denial of human rights in this region. The role of the civic initiatives and activists for restoration of human rights in this region is of special significance. The selected articles presented in a national seminar on the above theme organized by North East India Council for Social Science Research Shillong are being published in this book. The contributors dealt with conceptual issues and presented narratives of human rights violation caused both by the state and by the arm forces. This book also provides useful insights to the problem and is extremely useful to the enforcement agencies diplomats activists and human rights practitioners. 268 pp.

There are two broad themes in this book the state and the tribal power structures constitute one theme and gender and power constitutes the other. The book contains 20 research papers with an editorial note on these themes. The research papers are based on current and rigorous empirical studies made by the regional scholars and cover the state scenarios of Manipur Nagaland Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. The dynamics of power structures has been viewed from the traditional colonial liberal and post liberal frameworks. The book has both epistemological and empirical values and is highly helpful to the current social science researchers academicians and policy planners in this region and beyond. 288 pp.
Hardcover. Condizione: New. The book begins with a critique of the inter-relationship between community, state and market and then looks into the cross-border transactions in North-East India with special focus on the Tripura-Bangladesh border. It problematises the spatial identity of Tripura in pre and post-partition era and the implications of partition and border-making to the cross-border communities of Tripura and Bangladesh. It reflects on trade transactions between India and Bangladesh and more significantly, on informal cross-border trade, social transactions and people-to-people contact across the border. This book also captures the community anxieties emerging from land boundary institutions and the issues of conflict and development in the cross-border space of Tripura-Bangladesh. In conclusion the book captures the dynamics of community inter-dependence and opposition in the post-partition condition in the Tripura and Bangladesh.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Foreword. Acknowledgement. Preface. 1. Introducing Northeast India. 2. A Roadmap of the Look East Policy. 3. Regional Cooperation. 4. Governance and Security. 5. Contemporary Macro-Economic Trends. 6. The Trade Scenario. 7. A Critique of the Look East Policy. Index. Re-scaling of space has been an inseparable part of the capitalist development process. While the search for newer markets necessitates capitalism to transcend space, it simultaneously also requires spatial fixes for each regime of accumulation. It is a multi-scalar dialectical process which scholars have ascribed as annihilation of space by time and space-time compression. Among other factors, the interplay of both these processes related to time and space results in conditions for construction and re-construction of space in the form of territories. The contemporary phase of globalization is also a part of this longue duree. Re-scaling of space in the form of territories has also been an inherent part of Northeast India. From the perspective of the state there has been varying justifications e.g. whereas revenue generation along with trade has been the sole criterion for the colonial state, it has been politico-administrative for the post-colonial Indian state. Till the 1950's, the region was viewed within the anthropological paradigm. In the 1960's, the Indo-Chinese War (1962) marked a shift of the region towards security paradigm. The 1970's marked another shift towards political paradigm. This continued till the 1980's. From the late 1980's onward NER entered into a development paradigm under neo-liberal globalization. Now, the question of trade which was hitherto stymied and ignored during the post-colonial period, gained momentum with the launch of Look East Policy and eventual North Eastern Region Vision 2020. Northeast India under these two policies was officially made a major player in trade and commerce across the frontier and even beyond to South and Southeast Asia. This offered an 'arrowhead' role to NER in the matter of regional and cross-regional trade.

It deal with the different institutional modes of privatisation, accumulation and dispossession of communal land, the changes in land use and cropping patterns, the changes in land relations and the land-based identity of the tribal community as a result. The conclusive chapter makes a broader reflection of the grand narrative of privatisation, accumulation and dispossession of communal land in North East India.
