Saud's visit to the US (29 Jan - 9 Feb 1957) confirmed his support for Eisenhower's Cold War Doctrine, which pledged US support to Middle East countries against the spread of Communism and Nasser's influence post-Suez. Saud committed to act as mediator, a process which started before his arrival, and he left with a commitment of aid through the Dhahran Airbase Agreement. Arriving in New York aboard the USS Constitution, he addressed the UN General Assembly on the Middle East crisis before flying to DC. His partially paralysed 3 year old son Mashur accompanied him for treatment by Eisenhower's surgeon, and this received much press attention. Other members of his delegation included Emir Fahd and longtime advisor Yusuf Yassin. No author or publisher is indicated, but likely the US State Department with Ambassador George Wadsworth, Assistant Chief of Protocol Clement Conger, and Press Officer Joseph Reap named as attached to Saud's party, along with Acting Chief of Protocol Victor Purse, and US Aide to the King USAF Brigadier General Dale Smith (p4). This contains photo essays of the visit interspersed with sections giving background on Saud and Saudi Arabia (history, religion, society, culture, armed forces, broadcasting, oil, Saudi Embassy, Islamic Center in DC, traditional and modern views). // PHOTOS: 28 Press and wirephotos 8x10" with some variation, good to near fine with crop marks, labels, stamps, occasional closed tears + 2 uncredited printed photos on card. Stamp of Underwood & Underwood, a major New York photo agency of the early 20th century. Holograph notation on verso indicates "Gorky, wife, and son". Most likely an image of Gorky with Zinovy Peshkov (his adopted son and mentee who served as his private secretary) and Maria Fyodorovna Andreyevna. Gorky was actually a pen name for Alexei Peshkov; in fact, Maria was Gorky's common law wife, as the Russian Orthodox Church of the time made it almost impossible for him to get a divorce from his first wife. Most likely taken at the time of Gorky's tour of the U.S. in 1906, which ended in scandal when it was learned that he was not legally married to Maria. - 4 5/8 x 6 5/8" (12 x 17 cm) double weight photo with date stamp of Mar 28, 1928, and holograph note "Maxim Gorky, daughter-in-law and grandchild" on verso. - 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) press photo with Associated Press stamp and mimeographed text on verso (part of text has torn off but is present). These show Saud taking a high profile role in regional and world events through state visits, regional summits, and shuttle diplomacy to Pakistan, India, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Morocco, US and Spain. Themes include Arab unity and rivalry, the Suez, Lebanon and Syrian crises, Cold War and the Eisenhower Doctrine, Hajj, Saud's health, and Emir Faisal's ascendancy. Several appear to show a genuine warmth between leaders in spite of tensions between their nations.
