Ils sont précédés d'une préface par Emmanuel D'Astier de la Vigerie. La plaquette s'ouvre sur la « Comptine du quai aux fleurs » d'Aragon, poème dont le rythme lui valut d'être plusieurs fois mis en musique. La forme mélodique soutient, en se posant en contraste, une esquisse de Paris comme témoin de la violence. Il a vraisemblablement été titré ainsi en référence à l'appartement qu'occupait alors les d'Astier. Dans « Athena », Éluard exhorte le peuple grec à défendre sa liberté. La mention de la déesse évoque une Grèce antique, mythique, mais on notera qu'à la publication de l'ouvrage, ces vers font écho au contexte de la guerre civile grecque. Dans le récit autobiographique « Désespoir est mort », publié pour la première fois en 1943, Vercors dresse le portrait de trois personnages écrasés par le désespoir au lendemain de l'armistice. Mais le ton change lorsqu'ils observent ensemble un groupe de cannetons à la démarche comiquement martiale. Marges de la couverture et du texte légèrement jaunis., 1er cahier découronné assez peu nettement.
