Salah Fakhry befasst sich in seiner umfangreichen Studie mit der Bestimmung des Nomens und seiner Merkmale in den beiden grossen Grammatikerschulen von al-Basra und al-Kufa von al-Halil Ibn 'Ahmad al-Farahidi (100-170 n.H.) bis zu as-Suyuti (849-911 n.H.). Der Autor behandelt die Unterschiede zwischen den Grammatikschulen und den Grammatikern, deren Anfange im Buch des basrinischen Grammatikers Sibawayh al-Kitab (gest. 180 n.H.) liegen, und er geht auf die widerspruchlichen Ansichten ein, wie sie die fruheren Grammatiker in ihren Werken vertreten haben.
