Prima edizione
Hardcover. 1st. First Edition in English (originally published in 1910-11 in the Revue d'Infanterie as 'Les japonais en Mandchourie'). Small octavos; original red vertical-rib cloth, gilt lettered spines and front covers, map case with brown cloth ties intact. Text volumes Very Good (somewhat soiled, Volume 2 has faint staining to upper board, significant to lower; map case rear outer hinge has a 2" split). Folding maps in pocket at rear of Volume I (#s 1 through 12) and in map case (#s 13 through 22) are in fine condition, likely never opened). All maps with previous owner's blindstamp. This work is considered '.the most important critical work on the Russo-Japanese War.' (Encyclopedia Brittanica). Note that for this English edition the copious maps were redrawn on a larger scale and the positions of troops shown in color. Blainey in 'The Causes of War' described Cordonnier as "one of France's finest generals." In 1921, Cordonnier published 'Une Brigade au feu; Potins de Guerre,' a tribute to the 87th brigade which he commanded in World War I. One of publisher Hugh Rees' Pall Mall Military Series, which included works on military theory and history by European as well as British authors.
