Trade Paperback. Condizione: Like New. 397 pp. An excellent, spotlessly clean copy! Clean, fresh, sharp, tight, essentially flawless copy with crisp pages, clean text, and very light shelf wear. Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who first appeared in publicati…on in 1887. He was the creation of Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based consulting detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skillful use of astute observation, deductive reasoning and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that feature Holmes. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Holmes himself, this including the Blanched Soldier, and two others are written in the third person. In two stories (The Musgrave Ritual and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, whereas Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. Conan Doyle said that the character of Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations. Robert Mathias (Cover Design); John Atkinson Grimshaw (Cover Illustration) (illustratore).

A single issue of the venerable magazine in its original bright-orange covers. This issue comprises a variety of articles by Meredith Atkinson, Victor Auburtin, Valery Larbaud, "Doctor Vlasov" ("Communism and Literature"…), Leonid Grigorov, Panteleimon Romanov, Irene H. Lewis, Sir Edmung Gosse, Professor Fritz Kern, P. Morton Shand alongside several other articles and poems, together with some period advertisments. Light wear along the edges, else, bright, unmarked, and tightly-bound. The Living Age was a long-running and intellectually driven periodical (especially so its 1920s - 30's issues) which offered readers a rich cross-section of early 20th-century thought. Notable for its curated selections of travel writing, literary criticism, political commentary, and poetry drawn from major European and American journals, it is particularly valued for its insight into interwar cultural discourse and transatlantic intellectual currents.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaper. Condizione: Good. First Edition. Three Original Hand Written and Signed Letters by English Manipulative Surgeon Sir Herbert Atkinson Barker. Dated between 1925-1928. All letters are quite long and discuss his work and articles. All from his home in Italy. Sir Herbert Atkinson Barker 1869-1950 was an English manipulative s…urgeon. He developed a highly successful technique, specialising in knee and other damaged joints both in the top sportsmen and the general public. He advocated the avoidance of surgery. However, his methods were never formally approved by the medical establishment. Because of opposition towards a Lambeth degree or honorary degree for him, he was instead honored with a knighthood in 1922, nominally for services in World War I. In the 1920s he visited Doctor's Cave Beach Club in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and was most impressed by the curative powers of the waters. His subsequent articles about the beach lead to it becoming a popular destination for those seeking cures, and this was the start of the tourist industry in Montego Bay. He wrote Leaves from My Life: Reminiscences by the famous Manipulative Surgeon, published in 1927. Various Sizes. Condition is good. Light folding creases. More images can be taken upon request. Ref18815. Signed by Author(s).
