A news story without photos was regarded as lacking a sense of 'proof' that something had really happened. Two years later, after my colleagues and I were sent for training at a journalism school in Khartoum, photography was one of the subjects we all took. It was both theoretical and practical. It is with this in mind that I write in response to my daughter Atong Atem's work - forty years later and all the way in Australia - which combines family archives with self-portraits as a way of preserving our history. In the early 1980s, I became the head of the department of information for the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM).
