A remarkable roster, indeed, of this Club formed shortly after the Civil War. Among its members were two American Presidents (Woodrow Wilson, Grover Cleveland), two Secretaries of State (John Hay, Elihu Root), numerous cabinet members, ambassadors. Supreme Court Justices, editors, museum directors, men of letters, bankers, etc. -- as well as Nicholas Murray Butler himself, longtime President of Columbia, advisor to several Presidents, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931, whose copy this is. Butler has made manuscript corrections to the printed roster and appended a handwritten list of 25 additional names, up to the year 1944. Linen-backed boards, paper label on upper cover. Previous owner's book ticket on title page, bookplate of NICHOLAS MURRAY BUTLER on the front pastedown, and with his annotations on the final two pages bringing the roster up to date (to 1944) Limited edition of 201 copies, each copy bearing the initials of the fourth secretary, B. M. [i.e. Brander Matthews].
