Bound in contemporary vellum (spines quite darkened; internally quite clean). Paris: Typographia Regia, 1719. Third edition. THE CLASSIFICATION OF ALL PLANTS INTO GENERA. The Institutiones (1700) was mainly a translation of the Elements de botanique into Latin; and the Corollarium Institutionum Rei Herbariae (1703) was a supplement written on Tournefort's return from travels to the Near East, describing 1350 genera which he had found. This edition of 1719 is a reprint of these two works, but made substantive by the addition of an appendix by Antoine de Jussieu. This edition of Tournefor's is Jussieu's most important work, and he became a member of the Academie des Sciences as a result of his work. "Tournefort's significance lies in the fact of having classified all plants into genera. Hundreds of the generic names coined or accepted by him were later adopted by Linnaeus and are in use today." The engravings were drawn by Claude Aubriet, who worked with the botanists at the Jardin du Roi. L'ouvrage décrit une grande variété et un grand nombre d'espèces de fruits: 119 variétés de poires, 48 de prunes, 39 de pommes et pas moins de 34 variétés de cerises. Seuls les fruits de table sont la matière de ce traité pratique: les pommes à cidre de même que les raisins à vin en sont exclus. Dans un souci d'exactitude, les fruits, feuilles et branches sont présentés grandeur nature. On trouve également de nombreux modèles de greffe et de taille. Infatigable collaborateur de Duhamel de Monceau, l'abbé Le Berriays apporta beaucoup à la réalisation de l'ouvrage: un peu plus d'un tiers des dessins ainsi qu'une grande partie du texte. UN FONDATEUR DE L'AGRONOMIE MODERNE. Botaniste, membre de l'Académie des Sciences, Henri-Louis DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU (1700-1782) fut le premier à décrire les lois de la croissance des plantes, de la formation des écorces et du bois, la manière dont les branches se transforment en racine et réciproquement, le double mouvement de la sève et l'influence de l'air et du sol sur le développement des végétaux. Véritable ingénieur, son goût pour les problèmes concrets, l'expérimentation et la vulgarisation en font l'un des fondateurs de l'agronomie et de la sylviculture modernes.
