Han namn är förknippat med modernismen och han brukar betraktas som det främsta språkröret för de svenska Matisse-eleverna, de så kallade 1909 års män. Brunius inledde sin konstkritiska verksamhet 1904 och gjorde 1913 den första svenska översikten av det moderna måleriet. Det stilbrott, som det moderna måleriet innebar, inföll i huvudsak under perioden och Brunius utveckling som kritiker löpte således parallellt med det aktuella måleriets framväxt. I programskriften Färg och form, som visas på omslagsbilden, har Brunius klargjort sin uppfattning om den samtida konstens förtjänster och brister". - - - (Abstract:) "The [Swedish] art critic August Brunius wrote for the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet during the first decades of this century. His name is linked with modernism and he is normally considered as the principal spokesman for the Swedish group of pupils of Matisse called 'the men of 1909', a group of artists associated with the breakthrough of modern painting. Brunius started activities as an art critic in 1904 and during 1913 he completed the first Swedish overview of modern art with his work Färg och form (Colour and form). The change of style, as the new way of painting showed, took place during this period and Brunius' development as an art critic was running parallel with the progress of modern art. In what way did Brunius receive the new stimulus positively? Who was he and what was his ideological viewpoint? What arguments did he present and what reservations did he have? What counter arguments were there and why? These are questions I am trying to answer to illuminate the attitudes and assessments through a person's esthethical consideration that were topical in the debate of the 1st decade. [.] After an ideohistorical chapter the thesis consists of two main parts: the descriptive part where Brunius' criticism during the relevant period 1904-1913 is presented and the analytical part where his esthetics and evaluation perspective are penetrated. Parallels are drawn between contemporary English and French critics".
