At the heart of the discourse on literature in this era was the search for objective standards and rules against which all writing could be measured. Chapelain, the self-styled literary dictator of his time, attempted to establish these rules with his critique of "Adone." While his bombastic style and pedantry drew derision from later generations, his focus on form and structure paved the way for more nuanced and cogent critics. Saint-Evremond emerged as a witty and skeptical voice, highlighting the importance of taste and personal judgment. Boileau, armed with reason and a refined elegance, became the arbiter of French letters, forever enshrining the classical ideals of clarity, precision, and unity. La Bruyà re and Fà nelon brought a new perspective, shifting the focus from literary form to the human condition. Their insights into morality, psychology, and the nature of language enriched the critical landscape and opened up new avenues for exploration. Through these varied voices, this book reveals the profound impact of literary criticism in shaping the course of French literature, cementing its enduring legacy as a force that both guides and inspires artistic creation. The author traces Conrart's journey from a bourgeois background to his role as the first Secrà taire perpà tuel of the Acadà mie française, shedding light on the intellectual and social dynamics that shaped this era. Through Conrart's life and writings, the book delves into the complex relationship between literature, power, and society, examining the debates and controversies that marked the birth of modern French literature. The author argues that Conrart, despite being largely forgotten today, played a crucial role in the development of French classicism, serving as a bridge between the old and the new while embodying the aspirations and tensions of his time. Ultimately, this book provides a fresh perspective on the literary and cultural history of 17th-century France, offering valuable insights into the forces that shaped its enduring legacy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
