Rochas), fils de Joseph Auguste Ducoin, propriétaire, et Marie Adelaïde Tivollier (fille d'un notaire de Saint-Etienne-de-Crossey). Il est le neveu d'Amédée Ducoin, conservateur de la bibliothèque de Grenoble de 1816 à 1848. Licencié en droit en 1836, il exerce d'abord la profession d'avocat Grenoble, puis s'installe à Lyon en 1843, où il rejoint la Compagnie des fonderies et forges de la Loire et de l'Ardèche. Il meurt le 4 avril 1894. Sa collection d'estampes est vendue à Paris en mars 1896 : Catalogue d'estampes au burin, lithographies et eaux-fortes du XIXe siècle, uvre de Prud'hon, vignettes de l'époque romantique, quelques dessins, provenant de la collection de feu M. Sa monographie sur la conspiration de Paul Didier en 1816 a été presque entièrement recopiée par L.-G. Michaud dans sa Biographie, ou Vie publique et privée de Louis-Philippe d'Orléans, Paris, Garnier frères, 1849. L.-G. Michaud a été condamné pour plagiat par la tribunal correctionnel de la Seine en janvier 1850 (voir J.-M. Quérard, Les supercheries littéraires, III, pp. 249-251). Latreille (pp. 21-45), on trouve ce portrait d'Auguste Ducoin (pp. 35-36) : « Dans cette foule d'invités de choix, faisons une place à part à deux hommes que Mme Yemeniz honora d'une affection particulière, Auguste Ducoin et Victor de Laprade. Le premier, avocat du barreau de Grenoble, secrétaire de Berryer, vint se fixer à Lyon en 1843 et vécut dans l'intimité la plus étroite avec la famille Yemeniz, avant qu'il fût attaché à la direction de vastes entreprises métallurgiques. Jean-Paul Didier (1758-1816) avocat à Grenoble, hostile à la Révolution, salua le retour de Louis XVIII sans en être remercié. Il entre alors dans une conspiration tramée à Lyon contre les Bourbons, et en faveur du Duc de Reichstadt. Avec 300 officiers demi-soldes, en disgrâce ou soldats licenciés, il tente de soulever Grenoble dans la nuit du 4 au 5 mai 1816, mais son action est repoussée et vivement poursuivie par le général Gabriel Donnadieu. Il se réfugia en Piémont, mais fut dénoncé par deux de ses compagnons, livré au gouvernement français, condamné à mort par une cour prévôtale et exécuté aussitôt, place Grenette le 10 juin 1816.
