Le premier sort des presses d'Honoré de Balzac, il est l'un des plus recherchés, car le plus réussi, des impressions balzaciennes. De 1826 à 1828, année de sa faillite, Balzac fut imprimeur (et fondeur de caractères) et produisit toutes sortes de volumes, parmi lesquels de nombreuses plaquettes publicitaires, des physiologies, des ouvrages didactiques, des mémoires, des oeuvres littéraires et quelques pièces condamnées, comme celle-ci. Cette édition est beaucoup plus rare que sa deuxième édition, datant de la même année, et il est peu fréquent de trouver les deux tomes ainsi réunis. Très agréable exemplaire, malgré de menus frottis aux coiffes et des rousseurs sans gravité affectant le frontispice et 10 ff. du tome 1 et quelques rousseurs éparses au tome 2.
