Édition originale rare de cette thèse monumentale et très remarquée sur l'utilité de l'anesthésie obstétricale. Elle fit l'objet d'une édition commerciale chez Baillière. Elle est divisée en 6 chapitres : historique, physiologie générale (douleur, possibilité de supprimer réellement la douleur, mode de progression de l'anesthésie), physiologie spéciale (influence du chloroforme sur la mère et sur le foetus), critique (objections formulées contre l'emploi de cette méthode), technique (pp. 231-298), bibliographie (bibliographie exhaustive, occupant les pages 307-348). Emile Dutertre, né en 1854, fut médecin-major de première classe de l'armée territoriale, puis médecin en chef de l'hôpital de Douai et enfin médecin en chef de l'hôpital civil de Boulogne-sur-Mer. Il est également l'auteur de plusieurs publications sur l'histoire de l'anesthésie : Des anesthésiques dans l'antiquité (1885) et Des anesthésiques pendant le moyen âge (1886).
