Vom empirischen Standpunkt aus betrachtet, basieren somit nicht nur die einzelne Rechtsnorm, sei sie individuell-konkret oder generell-abstrakt, sondern auch die Rechtsordnung insgesamt und darüber hinaus das Rechtssystem einer regionalen Gesellschaft als Ganzes auf den 'Erfahrungen der Menschengemeinschaft'.Dies macht es möglich, alles Recht und alle menschlichen Rechtsgemeinschaften in der (Selbst-)Reflexion auf die Prämissen menschlichen Erlebens und Handelns (und das heißt, auch auf das Verhältnis von Normen und Handeln) als einen Gegenstand menschlicher Erfahrung, alle Wissenschaft vom Recht als eine soziale Erfahrungswissenschaft zu begreifen. Von diesen kulturellen, politischen und gesellschaftlichen Voraussetzungen ausgehend, hat der finnische Rechtstheoretiker und Philosoph Otto Brusiin (1906-1973) seit der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts, das in Kürze zu Ende geht, das gesamte Rechtsdenken - darin vergleichbar mit Rudolf von Ihering und Max Weber (um von Marx hier zu schweigen!) - durch seinen neuen Zugang zur rechtswissenschaftlichen Grundlagenforschung revolutioniert. Er wurde damit, wie die im selben Verlag in deutscher Sprache veröffentlichten 'Ausgewählten rechtstheoretischen Schriften' von Brusiin ('Der Mensch und sein Recht. Ausgewählte rechtstheoretische Schriften'. Hrsg. und eingeleitet von Urpo Kangas. 1990. ISBN 978-3-428-06911-8) belegen, zu einem der maßgebenden Begründer der modernen Rechtstheorie und Rechtsphilosophie, der schon in den 60er und 70er Jahren auch internationale Beachtung und Reputation erlangte. Seine Theorie und sein Forschungsprogramm menschlicher Rechtserfahrung haben in den letzten Jahrzehnten die rechtswissenschaftliche Grundlagenforschung beschäftigt und geprägt.Das vorliegende Brusiin-Sonderheft dokumentiert die von der Otto Brusiin-Stiftung ins Leben gerufenen, in den Jahren 1982-1997 in Helsinki und Tampere von einem Kreise internationaler Gelehrter aus den USA, Großbritannien, Lateinamerika und Deutschland gehaltenen 'Otto Brusiin Lectures'.
