Hard Cover. Condizione: NF. Condizione sovraccoperta: NF. First Edition, First Printing. Octavo. Ochre colored boards quarterbound in a dark brown cloth backstrip with shiny gilt lettering on the spine. Book has light bumping at the tail of the spine. White endpapers. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Leone Leoni, a novel by George Sand. Reprint published in 1978 by Cassandra Editions of the Translation by George Burnham Ives. Hardcover format. This edition OP. The life of George Sand (Amantine Lucille Aurore Dupin) reads like one of her romantic stories. This novelist, memoirist, literary critic and political commentator -- a true celebrity of her time -- led one of the most exquisitely romantic lives of any contemporary writer. This beautiful French woman knew many of the intellectual and artistic luminaries of her time; she had romantic affairs with Frederick Chopin, Jules Sandeau, Prosper Merimee, Alfred de Musset and several others; she maintained a close correspondence with Gustave Flaubert and actress Marie Dorvai. Where and when did she find the time - in between her socialist political writings, literary criticism, and whirlwind social life - to compose her many novels? But write them she did, and they were very popular. Perusing "Leone Leoni", one understands (even though it is a translation) the why of such popularity. A clear, but supple prose, enticing the reader with stories that beguile - Sand was no literary want-to-be. Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. First Edition Thus. There's something special often about children's books written in French, particularly if they are well illustrated. Sterling condition hardcover copy bound most handsomely in red cloth, with gilt and black lettering and illustrations to front cover and spine, black-embossed designs to rear cover, with unbruised tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear; not ex-library, with neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere. Brilliant, colorful illustration in paper, inset to front cover. Engravings by Delaville, vignettes by Maurice Sand, and a particularly fetching black-and-white frontispiece of the young Gribouille. Else and withal, a quite lovely children's book in French. The author, Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, was a leading novelist, poet and socialist of her day. Born on July 1, 1804, in Paris, France, having passed away on June 8, 1876, in her adopted village of Nohant, she is known particularly for publishing so-called rustic novels. This novel was first published in 1850.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
