Very dark blue [almost black] cloth with orange lettering and with a pictorial design blind stamped onto the front board, 287 pages [collecting various tales of the sea [involving Odysseus, Cleopatra, the Vikings, Trafalgar, the ironclads of the US Civil War, etc.], pictorial endpapers. Listed in the 1948 [but not the 1978] Bleiler Checklist [page 34]. Edge wear, toning to page edges, residue of book seller label affixed to top edge front free endpaper, and a book seller label affixed to the top edge of the rear endpaper. See photos. clph.

First Edition. The January 1938 issue of The American Magazine. Contains - Crime in White, novel by Theodora Du Bois which I believe was published as Death Wears a White Coat. Partners - An American Storiette by Frederick Schiller Faust (Max Band), part 3 of 4 of Dust Across the Range, a novel by Max Brand (Frederick Schiller Faust), The Young Spriggins, a Scattergood story by Clarence Budington Kelland, Virginia Voyage, a pirate story F Britten Austin, The World's Greatest Engineering Wonder, an article about the Grand Coulee and Bonneville dams by Richard L Neuberger, and others, Numerous vintage ads. Condition issues include light soiling with a damp stain (mostly visible from the reverse) to the front cover, soiling to the rear cover with two closed tears to the fore edge (1" & 1.5"), wear to the spine with small lost at the top & bottom, remnants of a mail label on the bottom of the front cover, and small dog ears to the bottom corner of the pages toward the front. The interior is clean and tight. No cutouts or missing pages. A good copy of a vintage magazine.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. 12mo. (21 cm.) vii, 322p. Decorated title page. Color pictorial endpapers. Red cloth with black letters on the front cover and the spine and with an image of a man in skins carrying a spear blind stamped in high relief. Binding designer unknown. Fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. No noticeable wear to extremities, just a hint of wanting to fray at the top of the spine, cloth clean and bright, letters bright, else near fine to fine with untrimmed pages and with no internal markings. Dut jacket spine slightly darkened and with touches of rubbing on some edges but crisp and not price-clipped. This is an account of the pageant of warfare through the ages from primitive humans to the advent of tank warfare in 1916. F. Britten Austin is also the author of A SIGN OF THE SEA and other works.
