First edition of this scarce souvenir program for the first Rose Cup amateur sports car race held in Portland, Oregon in 1961. The course was set up on the old city streets of Vanport, which was had served as World War II era shipyard labor housing. Destroyed in 1948 by a failed dike, and flood, the empty streets and depopulated ghost town were converted into Delta Park, with sport venues, and race track. The newly-formed Cascade Sports Car Club set up the race course straight through a swamp with a wooden bridge that required the organizers to keep scuba divers on standby to rescue wrecked drivers. Original printed portfolio, cover art by John W. Burgess on front flap (minor shelfwear, very slight rubbing), still NF set, inscribed by the artist to Gene Sherman (1944-2007) famed southern California auto designer and builder, renowned metal fabricator, automobile restoration specialist, worked at the Briggs Cunningham Automobile Museum until it closed, and later opened a studio in Huntington Beach, CA. First edition, inscribed, of this automobile racing portfolio of prints capturing the rugged dirt track era of the 1920's and 1930's when Burgess (d. 1992) was himself racing. The prints include All Crossed Up, Rained Out, Off the Fence, Buying a Little Fence, Trouble in the First Turn, The Weary Racers, Time Trials, and Burning the Midnight Oil. Burgess was a Boston-born race car driver, whose speed shop built midget open-wheel racers, and whose promotional abilities elevated New England racing before World War II. After developing superchargers and jet engines for GE during and after World War II, he became the curator of the Briggs Cunningham Automotive Museum until it closed.…

Colour-decorated limp covers, striking Art Deco cover art lettering in red, white, blue & silver on English racing green field, wire spiral binding as issued, NF copy. First edition of this scarce promotional catalogue touting the storied English Racing Automobiles, Ltd. (E.R.A.) founded in Nov., 1933, and manufactured 18 single seater racing cars capable of competing against most major race car manufacturers in motorsports at the time. The E.R.A.'s used 1.1 liter, 1.5 liter, and 2 liter supercharged engines competing in the Voiturette classes, and were particularly designed for hill climbs, and won many "Small Car" races. Of the original 18 ever built, 17 still survive today, although many have been heavily modified, and experienced changes to blowers, suspension, brakes, and styling to remain on the cutting edge. Their efforts were rewarded in 1935 by placing 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th at the prestigious Nurburgring "Voiturette" class race in 1935. No original copies in Worldcat.…

One printed broadside poster, sized 9.5 x 12.5 in., printed in red & blue on thick white cardstock, w/ large photo illustration of drivers & race cars (very slight shelfwear, minor dustsoiling, slight creasing to couple corners), still NF exemplar, with correction neatly printed on broadside indicating changed time of 3:00 PM from 2:30 PM, and date stamp of 1940. First edition of this very scarce promotional broadside announcing the thrilling opening of the 100 lap Dayton Speedway half-mile races in June, 1940. The Dayton Speedway was originally opened for its first official race on June 3, 1934, and would later be purchased by Frank Funk in 1937 who quickly began converting the 5/8th-mile oval into a half-mile, high-banked oval, and was rumored to have buried old trolley cars to fill in the banking which was finished at the end of 1939. He added an "oil substance" to make the track as hard as pavement, but on really hot days would end up getting soft and coating the cars and drivers. Funk had already built the first half-mile oval in the United States in Winchester, IN. The race in June, 1940 featured over 10,000 spectators, and featured Woody Woodford of Los Angeles, CA, Henry Schlosser of Cincinnati, OH, Jimmy Wilburn of Los Angeles, CA, Johnny DeCamp of Richmond, IN, "Duke" Dinsmore from Dayton, OH, Elbert Booker of Detroit, OH, Mike Salay of South Bend, IN, Johnnie Crone from Marysville, IN, and many others. First edition of this remarkably scarce and early speed catalogue for specially designed new overhead-valve cylinder heads and lightweight stripped down racing bodies for the Ford Model T in 1927. Arthur and his brother Louis, along with Cornelius W. Van Ranst designed and built the cylinder heads and racing cars beginning in 1922. Although the Chevrolet brother, Gaston Chevrolet -- winner of the 1920 Indy 500, had died in a spectacular crash in 1920, the two surviving brothers continued their drive to build faster cars. These special heads eliminated overheating and vibrations, boosted fuel economy, and enabled acceleration speeds of 5 to 40 mph in 16 seconds. The Fronty-Ford racing cars were sold for $ 2000.00, but a race car driver could also purchase the racing exhaust manifolds, special ball-bearing caps, Fronze front and rear brackets, oversize axle shafts, racing steering knuckles, racing wheels, filler caps, and specially designed one-man racing bodies & radiators.
