In 1941, Jim Auton enlisted in the wartime RAF as a pupil pilot. ln England he flew open-cockpit de Havilland Tiger Moths, twin engine Airspeed Oxfords and Avro Ansons. After being shipped out to South Africa he was compulsorily switched from pupil pilot to navigator. On learning that Air Bombers, a new category of aircrew, were serving as bomb aimers and co-pilots he opted for that role instead. Further training in the Middle East followed. Eventually he arrived at Amendola near Foggia in the south Italian war zone. He now served under the United States Supreme Command on No. 178 RAF night bomber squadron, flying B24 Liberators. The RAF aircrew existed in primitive conditions under canvas without the barest personal amenities. The duration of an operational tour was 40 sorties to such dangerous targets as Ploesti and Munich and the chances of survival were grim. in August 1944, the Liberators were ordered to fly over Warsaw at a height of only 600 feet, with wheels and flaps down to drop parachute containers of urgent supplies while the heroic Polish underground forces fought to liberate their frontline city from Nazi control. Officially reported losses on the 'Warsaw Air Bridge' were 30 per cent per night. Jim survived unscathed until severely wounded by flak over his 37th target. Aged twenty, his flying career was over. His subsequent ground duties include the dangers of bomb disposal. After demobilisation his early post-war years were spent struggling to survive in a hostile civilian environment of rationing and economic depression. After studying mechanical engineering and foreign languages, Jim operated as a worldwide trader of capital equipment such as manufacturing plant. He formed companies in the UK and abroad for buying goods from the capitalist west's biggest factories and exporting them to any client with purchasing power. Having established a network of top level contacts in the west and in all the Communist controlled countries, Jim came to the attention of the British Secret Services. He was ordered to become a spy. He refused. Dire consequences followed. Phone bugging, interception of mail and false accusations caused him to move his Companies to a new locality. Although he tried to shake off his pursuers, the harassment continued and he soon encountered the mysterious men of the Secret Services once again. B21.…
