Shirley Hughes (born 1927), who illustrated the front of the dustwrapper and the title-page, is an English children's author and illustrator who has written more than fifty books, and has sold more than 11.5 million copies, and has illustrated more than two hundred books. ***'There is a little Italian town where the sky is blue and the sea is warm and the wine is good and no one is to rich or too poor. Pepi arrived there, apparently from nowhere, one summer day. Giorgio was walking down from hs house on the hill to his group of bathing huts on the beach, and there suddenly was Pepi. Giorgio discussed the matter with his friends - Jacopo, the cheese-maker, Carlo, the hotel porter, Benozzo of the magnificent moustache, who ran a restaurant, and Vittore, the thinker. An orphan, Vittore decided, and aged five. There wasn't much more to discuss, for Pepi immediately and firmly adopted Giorgio, and moved in.
