Aggiungi al carrello285 x 220 mm. (11 1/4 x 8 1/2"). 2 p.l., xxxviii, [10], 4, *3-6, 5-408, 40 pp. Modern sympathetic sheepskin, raised bands, red morocco label with gilt lettering. With engraved frontispiece, two engraved in-text illustrations, and 162 FULL-PAGE PLATES AND ILLUSTRATIONS, OF WHICH 58 ARE DOUBLE-PAGE. Fowler 32 (first edition); Millard, French 14; Brunet II, 540 (both 1738 editions). A little rubbing to edges and some minor dings to covers, but an entirely solid, virtually unworn, and perfectly satisfactory retrospective binding. Contents with trivial browning and foxing, some minor damp spots right at edge of upper corner, other insignificant imperfections, but an extremely nice copy internally--quite fresh, with excellent margins, and with the engravings (printed on special paper) richly impressed. Considered the best introduction to architecture for the better part of a century after its appearance in print, this detailed manual appealed to students and laymen alike, being illustrated by an extraordinary number of plates illustrating a range of plans, facades, columns, arches, doors, balconies, stairways, chimneys, gardens, and more. First published in 1691, the work is based on the underlying principles and aesthetics promulgated by the 16th century Italian architect Giacomo Barozzio, better known as Vignola. A pupil of, and assistant to, Michelangelo, Vignola (1507-73) published his "Canon of the Five Orders of Architecture" in 1562 after visiting Rome to undertake a campaign of measuring and drawing its ancient buildings. A foundational work of classical architecture, his "Canon" defines the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite orders and illustrates the differences in the proportions and decoration within them. Through his book, through his own substantial work as a practicing architect, and through the students he inspired, Vignola exercised an influence on architectural style for many generations. In the volume we are offering here, French architect Augustin Charles d'Aviler (1653-1701), adds to Vignola's views his own original commentary, suggestions for variations on classical themes, and construction advice for the modern builder. As Millard tells us, "More than any other 'cours d'architecture,' [d'Aviler's] is designed for the layman and the artisan, and contains all that would aid the client, builder, and student," noting further that the author's "material on domestic architecture is a new and important introduction in the comprehensive architectural treatise." Fowler stresses the enduring popularity of d'Aviler's work, and says that "from the point of view of the practical architect this 'Cours d'Architecture' was the best work of its kind yet issued and soon superseded François Blondel's." D'Aviler was visited by inordinate suffering for his art: he was held captive by pirates for nearly two years while enroute to study in Rome; was treated poorly during his five years working under Louis XIV's favorite architect, Jules Hardouin Mansart; and purportedly died from being overworked at the age of 47. Aviler's most important contribution, the present book, in Millard's words, was "the only 'cours d'architecture' not written by a professor of architecture at the Academy, and it was the only one popular enough to achieve more than one edition.".
