This volume ends, in mid sentence, on page 144, so it not the complete part I of the work. Avraham Shmuel Hershberg (December 29, 1858, Kolna, Lomze District, Congressional Poland, Russian Empire - May 1940) was a Polish Jew, a Zionist, an historian, who focused on Israel in ancient times, a traveler and author of reference books. He was a member of "Bnei Moshe", an industrialist and a merchant. At the age of five he moved with his family to Warsaw, studied in a Heder and later pursued, in addition to religious studies, the stud of foreign languages, Hebrew, Russian and Polish literature and philosophy. After his marriage he moved to Bialystok, where his wife's family lived. He owned a textile factory and was also involved in trade. He did not fare well in business nor in marital life. He joined Hovevei Zion and helped Rabbi Shmuel Mohliber in his call to settle the Land of Israel. He was a friend of the writer Ze'ev Yabetz, after whose death he wrote a biography of him. In 1899 he immigrated to Eretz Israel but could not manage to make a living there. He stayed in and around Israel for about 18 months in 1899-1901) half of it in Jerusalem. He then returned to Russia. Shortly after his return to Europe, in 1901, he published his first impressions of his journey, in the book Mishpat HaYishuv Hakhadash beEretz Israel "The Trial of the New Yishuv in Israel", in which he sharply criticized what he found in the country. In addition, he published travel chapters in the newspapers "HaOlam", "Ha'Shiloach" and "HaMelitz." In 1910, c. 10 years after his return to Europe, he published the impressions of his travels in their entirety, in the book "Be'Eretz HaMizrakh." His many studies on the history of Israel were published in the magazines "HaMizrakh", "HaMeasef", "HeAtid", "HaZman", "HatKufa", "HaOlam", "HaDoar" etc. His essays are still used by researchers of the period. For lack of a publisher, much of his work remained unpublished and were lost but one, an essay on the history of Bialystok, was transferred to the United States even before the war, and was printed in New York under the name "Bialystok Notebook". Among his contributions to the Hebrew language is the word KHAZIT, meaning (miliary) front.…
