Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the Romanà s Lecture of 1921 by Joseph Bà dier of the Acadà mie française and professor at the Collà ge de France. Delivered in June of the same year, the lecture was a prestigious event, hosted at Oxford University by the author at the invitation of the institution. The author, a medieval scholar, pays homage to the university and its connection to eminent thinkers such as Bentley and Bude. He goes on to honour the Bodleian Library for its valuable collection and offers a respectful nod to the students of Oxford who, like the French soldiers he is related to, bravely served and sacrificed their lives in the Great War. He begins the lecture by highlighting the literary renaissance that took place in France around the period of the First Crusade. At a time marked by religious fervour and scholarly pursuits, this period witnessed an outpouring of literary masterpieces representing diverse genres, and significantly, it marked the birth of the French literary tradition. Bà dier attributes this outpouring of literary creativity to the spirit of the time, which celebrated chivalry and reflected the nation's readiness to fight for what they believed in. The author then delves into the themes of sacrifice, loyalty, and justice that permeate the chansons de geste, a popular genre of the era. He argues that these themes are central to the understanding of the feudal mindset and the spirit of the time. Bà dier focuses on the Chanson de Roland as an embodiment of these ideals. The epic poem, composed around 1100, tells the story of Roland, a valiant knight, and his companions, who are given the honour of protecting the rearguard of Charlemagne's army as it returns from Spain. Roland's tragic end, a result of his own flawed judgement, serves as a reminder of the harsh reality of war and the sacrifices that must be made in the pursuit of a cause. In essence, the book explores the complex relationship between literature and history, and how the study of medieval literature can shed light on the values, beliefs, and experiences of past societies. The author demonstrates the enduring power of stories to convey universal truths and inspire reflection on the human condition.
