Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: Very good. First edition. Contributor Bryon R. Hankee's copy of the proceedings of this significant conference, with his signature on both the front wrap and the title page. Tipped in after the title page are several routing slips and a one-page 1966 typed letter signed (TLS) from environmentalist-philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller, who served as the Conference Chairman, on Rockefeller Plaza stationary. It begins: "Dear Mr. Hanke, President Johnson has asked me to send you under separate cover a copy of the Proceedings of the White House Conference of Natural Beauty." And continues: "I think we can all be heartened by the encouraging wave of interest and action for the natural beauty of America which has taken place since the White House Conference. The Congress passed the Highway Beautification Bill of 1965 which incorporated many of the conference's recommendations on that subject. ." Hankee was a Supervising Landscape Architect for the Federal Housing Administration, and laid in also are his remarks that are reprinted on page 135 of the volume, as well as the statement by a presumed colleague, Richard J. Canavan, which is reprinted on page 462. A carbon copy/draft of Canavan's statement also laid in shows, we think, that Hankee excised a passage from it and inserted it into his own statement. Clearly they were working together. Hankee argues for wise "cluster" development that privileges open space and urban parks, and he refers to Canavan's statement in his as well as to the work of Jane Jacobs. The 1965 White House Conference on Natural Beauty was a significant gathering and moment in U.S. environmental history, bringing together about 1,000 leaders and stakeholders and turning greater attention from traditional conservation of wilderness and wildlands to a "creative conservation" that also considered urban, rural, and aesthetic considerations. Lady Bird Johnson's heralded "America the Beautiful" campaign was spun out of it. For more, see this excellent 3-page recollection of the conference in The Environmental Forum. In this volume, President Johnson gives the "Conference Call" in Chapter 1 (available via the LBJ Library), touching in different sections on cities, countryside, highways, rivers, trails, pollution, and the intentions of the conference. In the second chapter, Lady Bird Johnson opens the general session with remarks followed by Chairman Laurance Rockefeller's remarks. The proceedings from 15 conference panels follows with statements and discussions for each, the volume running nearly 800 pages (see our photo of the table of contents). The concluding Chapter 21 is "A Response from the President." Beige wraps, perfect bound, with lettering and the U.S. seal in blue. Conference directory, nominal index, and topical index at rear. Very good with general toning and mild creasing and curvature to the spine--a book that was clearly referenced by Hankee. A few shallow tears in one spot at the top of the front wrap and a bump to top right corner of spine. Four paperclips attached to the relevant pages where Hankee and Canavan's statements appear, the last holding a slip with some notes in Hankee's hand. A few spots of marginalia from Hankee. While not an uncommon volume, exceptional with the letter from Rockefeller and Hankee's inclusions. Signed. …
