Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Institute of Contemporary Art, designed by Diller + Scofidio (now Diller Scofidio + Renfro), was the first new art museum to be built in Boston in a century. Opened in December 2006, the ICA is located on a small parcel of land on Boston Harbor and this is the 25th location for the museum in its 75 year history and its first, permanent, free-standing home. "The ICA's decision to hire Diller + Scofidio reflected our belief in the firm's vision that architecture can shape as well as reflect contemporary experience," stated Jill Medvedow, director of ICA. The architects balanced use of cool and transparent glass with the warmth of wood and the energy of light, as well as their design of spare, flexible spaces for presenting contemporary art, was a revelation for a city and an architectural community. ''Their brilliant and beautiful design of the ICA was a harbinger of change: edgy, bold and breathtaking, transforming the landscape for contemporary art and culture in Boston and for the artists, art and ideas of our time," Medvedow has said. For Denise Scott Brown, who is among the most important architects of the postwar era, photography has long served as a critical medium through which to perceive, document and think about the world in which designers operate. Fascinated by the ephemeral and the everyday, Scott Brown took photographs for fun, research and teaching, and later as a component of design and planning projects. Through the lens of her Alpa camera she sought to penetrate the irreducible complexities of life around her - and to make a case for the architect and planner's role in intervening within it. Encounters presents, for the first time, an essential collection of Scott Brown's photography from the 1950s to the 1970s: the formative decades during which Scott Brown left her home city of Johannes- burg to study in London, traveled through Europe, moved to the United States, developed the pro- found interest in postwar suburbia from which Learning from Las Vegas would emerge and joined her husband Robert Venturi in practice. Accompanied by an essay on Scott Brown's conception of the ordinary, this collection of photographs offers a window into modes of thinking that continue to structure how designers perceive the world around them.

Trade Paperback. Condizione: New. La Ruta del Peregrino (the pilgrimage route) stretches a distance of 117 kilometers through the vast and imposing mountain range of Jalisco, Mexico. Approximately two million people participate each year in this religious phenomenon to meet the Virgin of Talpa as an act of devotion, faith, and gratitude. This book conveys the feeling of traveling on the pilgrim s route and encountering architectural monuments and their infrastructure, like shelters and viewpoints, embedded in the harsh landscape. Each introduced landmark, designed by renowned architects, sparks a dialogue about sustainability and austerity, landscape and architecture. Landscape of Faith is a documentation of the way architecture can increase the identity of a pilgrimage route and add layers of meaning that reach far beyond the religious.' Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Macao, a Special Administrative Region of China, is among the most densely populated regions in the world and a thriving metropolis marked by a dynamic blend of contrasting urban typologies. The city's urban complexity, resulting from rapid growth and high-density construction, cannot be simply characterized as the Las Vegas of the East, as the city is sometimes referred to. Its historic center has been largely preserved and has undergone rapid development: A series of newly built, large-scale leisure and entertainment complexes defi ne the city's iconic casino district, while urban planning and architecture in various new areas refl ect ambition and confi dence in contemporary urban development. In this publication, the curators of the Macao exhibition at the 19th Venice International Architecture Biennale, architects Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu, present the co-existing parallel worlds of Macao. The many-faceted architectural landscape of Macao is documented through Iwan Baan's remarkable photography. AUTHORS: Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu are architects and educators. In 1997, they co-founded Amateur Architecture Studio in Hangzhou, China. Together, the two also founded the architecture department at the China Academy of Art in 2003. Their focus on re-establishing a contemporary language for Chinese architecture is reflected in their built works such as Ningbo Historic Museum and the Xiang- shan Campus of the China Academy of Art. The latter was named one of The 25 Most Significant Works of Postwar Architecture all over the world, selected by the New York Times in 2021. Iwan Baan is a Dutch photographer based in Amsterdam and the U.S., known primarily for images that narrate the life and interactions that occur within architecture. With no formal training in architecture, Baan's photographs reflect the questions and perspectives of the everyday individuals who give meaning and context to the architecture and spaces that surround us. His artistic approach has given matters of architecture an approachable and accessible voice. In 2012 he received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for his work on the Torre David in Caracas, Venezuela, gaining him further international acclaim. 146 illustrations Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A tale of two city planning projects and their clash with tradition, as captured by the brilliant Dutch photographer. First published by Lars Mueller in 2010 and now highly collectible, Brasilia-Chandigarh receives a new printing in a compact format. Dutch photographer Ivan Baan (born 1975) was originally commissioned by the publisher to document two urban planning experiments undertaken in the 1960s: Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer's Brasilia and Le Corbusier's Chandigarh. In both cities, foreign architecture commingled with indigenous culture. This publication addresses how these two cities were transformed into works of modernism, and how the people who live in them acclimated accordingly. Baan's photographs reflect the questions and perspectives of the people who contextualize the spaces that surround us. This compact format includes essays by Cees Nooteboom on Baan's photographs and by Martino Stierli on the architectural and planning history. AUTHOR: Iwan Baan (*1975) is a Dutch photographer based between Amsterdam and the U.S., known primarily for images that narrate the life and interactions that occur within architecture. In 2012, he received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for his work on the Torre David in Caracas, Venezuela, gaining him further international acclaim. Architects turn to Baan to give their work a sense of place. At the same time, the sectoral city of Chandigarh was rising according to plans by Le Corbusier. The "test tube city" arose as an export of modernity from a Western planning euphoria that displayed utopian traits. In both cities, foreign architecture entered into a harmonious relationship with indigenous culture, forming new and independent identities. This publication addresses the question of how modernism has been appropriated in both cities, and how the people who live in them deal with it. Commonalities and differences are identified and images of everyday urban life showcased. On the initiative of the publisher, the young photographer Iwan Baan has taken stock of contemporary life in both cities.
