This copy inscribed to Marjorie Hopkins and signed Matthew Mark. On Chicago Tribune letterhead, Babcock writes to Mrs. Hopkins about a manuscript accepted for publication. The next letter states: "For the time being, my name and newspaper connections are not to be mentioned in any public reference to the book." There is another letter from Babcock thanking Mrs. Hopkins for the return letter. There is one more letter sent to Mrs. Hopkins from someone who will remain a mystery, who read the book and it states: "SORRY I CANNOT SAY THAT I LIKED IT--WHY DID HE WANT TO WRITE THAT KIND OF BOOK?" This copy inscribed and signed to optometrist and "fellow Libertyvillain" Robert E. Sayers by the author using both his pseudonym and his real name, Frederic Babcock. Author would later become editor of the book section of the Chicago Tribune and contribute hundreds of articles to The Nation and Travel Magazine. He made national headlines in the late 1950s when he proclaimed that Vladimir Nabokov's novel Lolita "is pornography and we do not plan to review it." Babcock's papers are held at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center. Near Fine in Good dustjacket, modest soiling and shallow edge chipping, lower front panel with few inch area of loss.
