Il est également passionné par l'Égypte. À ce titre, il se consacre à l'égyptologie en amateur éclairé, mais aussi il participe à la "modernisation" de l'Égypte. C'est à lui que l'on doit la création de la ville nouvelle d'Heliopolis avec ses bâtiments inspirés de diverses architectures du monde entier et son réseau de tramways électriques.C'est le fondateur d'une célèbre dynastie industrielle.
