Contemporary full leather; boards rubbed/scuffed with some stains; board edges abraded with corners worn and gilt tooling barely evident along fore…-edges only; maroon title label chipped but retains bright gilt lettering; some losses and dulling/flaking to spine's gilt bars and compartment centerpieces. Small chips to front free endpaper; antiquarian ink ownership inscription written with stylistic flourish on ffep along with less elegant and somewhat illegible pencil signature; foxing/toning throughout with some stains and creased corners; two short fore-edge margin tears to pages 299-302. Binding is firm. Old newspaper clipping (circa 1818) laid-in between pages 52-53. Total of eight b/w plates: {#1} frontispiece "Triumphant return of the American Squadron . . ." opposite b/w engraved title page which is followed by text title; {#2} "Capt. Sterrett in the Schr. Enterprise . . .
