April 1945 und ein Buch über die Geschichte des Flugplatzes Langensalza 1937 - 1947 in Langensalza Befragungen durchführte wurde mir auch ein Gespräch mit Harry Bähr ans Herz gelegt. Als ich am 16. Februar 2005 bei Familie Bähr zu Gast war bekam ich auch eine kleine Bröschüre von Heinrich Lutz in die Hände. Mein Vorschlag daraus ein kleines Büchlein zu machen halten Sie jetzt in den Händen. Mir geht es in der Geschichtsforschung vor allem darum Erlebtes und persönliche Erfahrungen der Nachwelt zu erhalten. Harry Bähr geboren 1927 in Elbing, damals Ostpreußen. Er beendete 1941 die Ausbildung und wurde mit 16 Jahren einberufen. 1944 kam er zur Bekämpfung von Luftzielen in das belgische Lüttich. Am 04.09.1944 griffen die Amerikaner seine Einheit an, die schwere Verluste erlitt. Nach dem Rückzug versetzte man ihn im November 1944 nach Langensalza, um auf dem Fliegerhorst Langensalza Unterstände für Flugzeuge zu bauen. Langensalza gefiel uns von Anfang an. Daher wundert es nicht, das er sich nach dem Krieg, zu Fuß von Prag nach Langensalza durchschlug, um ein neues Leben aufzubauen. (Gespräch am 16.02.2005) Harry Bähr und Heinrich Lutz wurden als Jungendliche zum Reichsarbeitsdienst eingezogen und erlebten so die Härten des Krieges bald hautnah mit. Von den etwa 60 Jugendlichen aus der Heimatgemeinde von Bähr überlebte die Hälfte den Krieg nicht. Kommen wir zum Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD). Dieser war ein Teil des nationalsozialistischen Machtapparates im Deutschen Reich der Jahre 1933 1945. Er entstand aus dem Freiwilligen Arbeitsdienst, welcher ab 1931 von Konstantin Hierl zum freiwilligen nationalsozialistischen Arbeitsdienst umgeformt wurde. Nach der Machtübernahme Hitlers wurde Hierl zum Staatssekretär und Reichsleiter ernannt und unterstand ab dem 31. März 1933 dem Reichsarbeitsministerium. Mit Wirkung vom 3. Juli 1934 wurde der RAD dem Reichsinnenministerium unterstellt. Ab 1935 war die Zeitschrift Der Arbeitsmann das offizielle Organ des RAD. Juristische Grundlage für die Einführung der Dienstpflicht war ein von der Reichsregierung erlassenes Gesetz, in dem es hieß: Der Reichsarbeitsdienst ist Ehrendienst am deutschen Volke. Alle jungen Deutschen beiderlei Geschlechts sind verpflichtet, ihrem Volke im Reichsarbeitsdienst zu dienen. Der Reichsarbeitsdienst soll die deutsche Jugend im Geiste des Nationalsozialismus zur Volksgemeinschaft und zur wahren Arbeitsauffassung, vor allem zur gebührenden Achtung der Handarbeit erziehen. Der Reichsarbeitsdienst ist zur Durchführung gemeinnütziger Arbeiten bestimmt. (§ 1 - Gesetz für den Reichsarbeitsdienst vom 26. Juni 1935) Alle Männer zwischen dem 18. und 25. Lebensjahr hatten eine sechsmonatige Dienstzeit abzuleisten. Am 4. September 1939 wurde die Dienstpflicht auch auf die weibliche Bevölkerung ausgedehnt. Der RAD wurde bei Bauarbeiten (Reichsautobahnen), in der Landwirtschaft, im Forst, beim Deichbau und in der Entwässerung eingesetzt. Mit Fortdauer des Krieges wurde der RAD immer mehr für kriegswichtige Bauaufgaben, wie bei der Errichtung des Atlantikwallbaues, eingesetzt.
