Quarter Leather. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Two volumes, with first being text, and second containing 100 hand colored lithographs. Rebound, retaining original boards. Dark burgundy leather over spines, with gold lettering. Edges of original covers are worn. Scattered light wear and aging. Lightly inked name, date (1872), and notations in blank space near top of title page. Tissue guards between plates have been affixed, in three small points along outside edges, to the blank versos of the preceding plate. Many guards have torn and loosened, though this does not affect plate images. There is very light soiling affecting upper edge of first 25 plates, though remaining outside of borders. Images remain bright and clean. Due to size and weight, extra postage will be required for priority or international mail.

Leather is scuffed and hinges are strained, but all still firmly attached. Spine labels with gold lettering say 'Executive Documents 1st S. 33d Cong.' and 'Vol. 15.P'T 2. 1853-54'. Early ownership name John Kuhn written on front endpaper and first blank. IX + 300 pages + 37 plates and maps. All plates present, several in toned lithograph. Falco Nigriceps, Psaricolius Curaeus and 13 other bird plates are in color. The reptiles and fish are all in black and white. Some foxing here and there including some on the plates, but it is not too aggressive or out of the normal range for its age. This volumes is complete and includes the following: The Andes and Pampas by Archibald MacRae; Minerals by J. Lawrence Smith; Indian Remains by Thomas Ewbank; Mammals by Spencer Baird; Birds by John Cassin; Reptiles, Fishes and Crustacea by Charles Girard; Shells by A.A. Plates bright. Bookplate, A. B. Farn, and tab, H. Reeks, Newfoundland, on the front pastedown. Spencer Fullerton Baird (1823-1887) was an American naturalist, ornithologist, ichthyologoist, herpetologist, and museum curator. He was the first curator at the Smithsonian Institution. He later served as assistant secretary to the Smithsonian from 1850-1878, and secretary from 1878-1887. He dedicated himself to expanding the collection and wrote widely. John Cassin (1813-1869) was an American ornithologist. He worked as curator and vice president of the Pennsylvania Academy of Natural Sciences. He focused on building the collection of bird specimens, rather than working in the field. George Newbold Lawrence (1806-1895) was a businessman, author and amateur ornithologist. He conducted bird surveys and contributed to The Birds of North America.

Bookplate in each volume; spines slightly sunned; minor use at corners; a beautiful set, the plates absolutely clean and bright.

4to [29 x 23 cm]; 2 volumes, lvi, 1,005; vii pp, 100 fine hand-colored lithographed plates, index and tables in text volume. plate volume in contemporary half calf, spine gilt, front internal hinge re-enforced, spine foot with large chip, marbled edges; text volume in newer black cloth and light staining and foxing, plates clean and bright. The text volume is from the Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, Volume IX, and was later reprinted verbatim as the text volume in Baird and Cassin's The Birds of North America, and is identical in all respects except for the title page. The text volume in this set is an actual Volume IX from the Pacific railroad set. Many of the plates were also first printed in the Pacific railroad set or in the US & Mexican Boundary Survey of 1859. About half of the plates were prepared for the present work. Nissen 62. Anker (Bird Books and Bird Art) 22: "All of the plates are said to have been carefully retouched with this edition in view; several of them were redrawn entirely from better and more characteristic specimens of the birds. . . the work was re-issued in 1870 in an almost unaltered form".
