Since this pronouncement by Nicolai Rubinstein, who nonetheless premièred it with bravura, the work has unjustly been stuck with the label of 'unplayable'. The wild, almost demonic character of this 'oriental fantasy' has certainly contributed to this reputation: through the use of Caucasian and Armenian folk idioms Balakirev calls forth a keyboard firework that aroused the admiration even of the Titan Liszt. Our edition provides today's pianists with a musical text that is not only reliable and accurate, but also clear and well-organised._; «Une pièce magnifique, mais qui est très difficile - peu seront en mesure de la maîtriser .» Depuis ce propos de Nicolaï Rubinstein - qui pourtant réussit avec maestria la création de l'oeuvre -, cette pièce est dotée à tort de la réputation d'être «injouable». Il ne fait aucun doute que le caractère sauvage, presque démoniaque de cette «Fantaisie orientale» y a contribué: utilisant des mélodies populaires du Caucase et d'Arménie, Balakirev déclenche au clavier un véritable feu d'artifice pianistique, qui provoque même l'admiration de ce titan du piano qu'était Liszt. Seit diesen Worten von Nicolai Rubinstein - dem dann aber die Uraufführung mit Bravour gelang - haftet dem Werk zu Unrecht der Ruf des 'Unspielbaren' an. Sicherlich hat der wilde, fast dämonische Grundcharakter dieser 'Orientalischen Fantasie' dazu beigetragen: Unter Verwendung von kaukasischen und armenischen Volksweisen entfacht Balakirew hier ein Tastenfeuerwerk, das selbst den Titanen Liszt zu Bewunderung veranlasste. Heutige Pianisten dürfen sich bei unserer Ausgabe nicht nur auf Texttreue verlassen, sondern werden auch den lupenreinen und übersichtlich gestalteten Notentext zu schätzen wissen._.…
