Balam, Gilberto. Tlatelolco: Reflexiones de un Testigo. Tercera Edicion. 1969. Text in Spanish. Illustrated blue and magenta wrappers with photos of a large Mexican crowd of peaceful protesters. Balam was a left wing Mexican activist and was present at the demonstrations and battle fronts promoted by the student movement. On October 2, 1968 in the Tlatelolco section of Mexico City, the Mexican Armed Forces opened fire on a group of unarmed civilians, mainly college students, in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas who were protesting the upcoming Olympics. The death toll ranks between 300-400 and goes down in history as the Tlatelolco Student Massacre. Reflections was written in captivity after having served two years due to what Balam claims were political reasons. He focuses his narrative on class consciousness, and the student movement being fueled by the lack of party representation, failing capitalist system, and the decreasing faith in the Díaz Ordaz government. Pencil annotations throughout the first few pages. Minor wear to covers and a small tear at the bottom right corner. Binding is tight and else clean. Overall good condition.
