Hard Cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 4th Printing. 4th printing (Ford-Smith, Folio 76 #1140). Includes publisher's slipcase. Fine book in near fine slipcase. Slipcase faintly scuffed. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2003 Hard Cover. 288 pp. A collection of humorous vignettes by various authors, with contributions by William Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson, Charles Dickens, Winston S. Churchill, the Queen of England, G.K. Chesterton, P.G. Wodehouse, Mark Twain, Dorothy Parker, Groucho Marx, etc., etc. Ever since Chaucer's day, when the host of the Tabard Inn in Southwark rose to welcome the Canterbury Pilgrims with a joke, the After Dinner Speech, designed, if possible, to reduce the assembled company to helpless merriment, has presented the ultimate challenge. The best speakers are natural story-tellers - Gerard Hoffnung, reading a selection of letters from continental hoteliers: 'There is a French widow in every bedroom affording delightful prospects'; John Mortimer telling the woeful tale of a man's numerous unsuccessful attempts to murder his wife: 'At no time did Mrs Scott feel that the magic had gone out of their marriage' - and in this collection of post-prandial treasures you will find the very best of them, from Groucho Marx on how to resist a femme fatale, to Ralph Steadman surreally addressing the Lewis Carroll Centenary Dinner. 'Goodness', said a friend on greeting Mae West, 'where did you get those beautiful pearls?' 'Goodness', replied Mae, 'had nothing to do with it.' Shaggy dog stories, practical jokes, sporting anecdotes, rousing toasts, travellers' tales and risque reminiscences rub shoulders in this essential collection with real-life revelations and moments of history. Among the guests are Peter Ustinov, Jilly Cooper, Brian Johnstone, Charles Dickens, Dorothy Parker, Robertson Davies, Henry Grady and A.P. Herbert. There is food and drink in abundance. There is gentle reflection and endearing charm as well as defiant frivolity. Above all there are stories for every occasion - witty, absurd, momentous, philosophical, fascinating, poignant, and forever entertaining.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. This popular and classic text chronicles America's roller-coaster journey through the decades since World War II. Considering both the paradoxes and the possibilities of postwar America, William H. Chafe portrays the significant cultural and political themes that have colored our country's past and present, including issues of race, class, gender, foreign policy, and economic and social reform. He examines such subjects as the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, the origins and the end of the Cold War, the culture of the 1970s, the rise of the New Right, the events of September 11th and their aftermath, and various presidencies. Now thoroughly revised and updated, the seventh edition of The Unfinished Journey combines and reorganizes several chapters. The former Chapter 14, "New Rules, Old Realities," is now divided into two chapters. The new Chapter 14, "An Era of Political Malaise," covers the political history of the 1970s. It is followed by Chapter 15, "A Divided Culture, A Divided Society," which assesses the shifting cultural landscape of the 1970s and the emergence of major fissures in the social system of the nation. The final chapter contains substantial new material on the administration of George W. Bush, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the election of 2008, and the first year of Barack Obama's presidency. Brilliantly written by a prize-winning historian, The Unfinished Journey, Seventh Edition, is an essential text for all students of recent American history. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Rivista / Giornale
Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. A vintage magazine targeted for railroad commuters from the mid 1950's. This issue is marked Volume 1, Number 1 and is probably the premier (first) issue. While the date that appears on the cover is December 1955, the title page has a date of November 1955 (typo? late printing?). Perhaps not, since it indicates on the title page that it is published four times a year (November, January, March and May). "Published in the interest of all commuters, whatever their station." In addition to a variety of essays of interest to commuters ("Why Trains Run Late" - "Eyestrain on Trains", etc.), there is a comic b/w photo essay on Sid Caesar commuting on the 11:35 with Nanette Fabray, his TV wife. Also includes a feature on 'Tunnel Bridge' (the card game), a crossword, and a cryptogram. The crossword has been completed in pencil by the prior owner. A whimsical, colorful cover by Paul Arlt wraps around from the front cover to the rear and depicts commuters seem through train windows. (They all seem to be men! A sign of that time!) The rear cover is missing a very small piece in one upper corner near the spine which really does not take away from the cover art; otherwise, this piece is in very good condition.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dust Jacket. First Edition; First Printing. Library stamps/marks/labels/pocket/slip, rear hinge started, light edgewear, otherwise light wear. Still serviceable and solid hardcover.; Report of The Committee of Fifteen, formed by the New York City Chamber of Commerce in 1900 to investigate prostitution and recommend corrective measures, legislation, and promotion of wholesome moral and living conditions. This work was part of the Reform movement that overthrew Tammany Hall control of the city. "all public, obtrusive manifestations of prostitution shall be sternly repressed. Not prostitution itself, when withdrawn from the public eye so as to be noticeable only to those who deliberately go in search of it . but all such manifestations of it as belong under the head of public nuisance. The result of the adoption of this policy will be, indeed, the continued existence of houses of ill-fame . and these will remain undisurbed under the condition that they remain unobtrusive. . Recognizing, then, that prostitution, although it ought not to exist, does and will for an indefinable time continue to exist among us, we are bound, as men advising for the moral welfare of our great city in the immediate future, to point out that form of the evil which, all things considered, will work the least harm. The better housing for the poor, purer forms of amusement, the raising of conditions of labor, especially of femal labor, better education, minors more and more withdrawn from the clutches of vice by means of reformatories, the spread of contagion checked by more adequate hospital accomodations, the evil itself unceasingly condemned by public opinion as a sin against morality, and punished as a crime with stringent penalties whenever it takes the form of a public nuisance: - these are the methods of dealing with it upon which the members of the Committee have united and from which they hope for the abatement of some of the worst of the consequences at present, and for the slow and gradual restriction of its scope in the future." - Recommendations of the Committee, pages 178-179. Fascinating Progressive Era document that captures how the Reform Movement used social science research to promote solutions to urban problems that attempted to address root causes rather than law enforcement only. ; Ex-Library; xiii, 188 pages.
