Any such study must be written with Clarence Alvord's classic The Illinois Country, 1673~1818, in the background. Alvord's book is now over seventy years old, however, and Charles has added new and important perspectives on the subject. Rather than limiting the Illinois Country to the east side of the Mississippi (Alvord's book was written as the background for Illinois state history), Charles deals with both sides of the river. This is the correct approach, for in the eighteenth century the Mississippi was not a line of division, but was instead the geographical feature that bound together French~Creole society in the region. French Illinois included both sides of the Upper Mississippi River. Moreover, Charles has broadened our understanding of French colonialism in the Illinois Country by dealing at some length with subjects, such as slavery and agriculture, that were of little interest to Clarence Alvord. Charles' more comprehensive approach, of course, reflects changes that have occurred in American historiography over the past two generations, but in any case, his larger perspective makes his book richer and more interesting for today's readers. Finally, it is refreshing to read about French Illinois from a French point of view. Alvord's biases were distinctly Anglo~American; Charles' are passionately French.
