This book investigates the effectiveness of different methods of administering saline purgatives such as sodium citrate and sulphate, and barium chloride, and how these methods can impact purgation. It was previously unclear whether the subcutaneous or intravenous administration of th…ese salts could cause purgation. The author conducted experiments on rabbits to determine which methods were most effective in producing purgation, and found that all three salts increased the amount of feces eliminated when administered subcutaneously or intravenously. Larger doses of the salts also increased the fluidity of the feces. The findings suggest that the mechanism for purgation is located in the intestinal walls and is stimulated by saline purgatives regardless of how they are introduced into the body. This book contributes to our understanding of the physiological mechanisms involved in purgation and the effects of different methods of administering purgative salts.
