Aggiungi al carrelloSee Roy's entry in the Oxford DNB. He part-wrote and performed the perennially popular 'My Girl's Pussy', with other songs with suggestive titles. The two men's careers both began in the 1920s, and Daniels played in the band of Roy's brother Sid Roy. The two signatures laid down on an 8.5 x 7 piece cut from the leaf from an auto…graph album. Somewhat discoloured, otherwise in good condition. ONE: Signature of 'Harry Roy'. On 6 x 4.5 cm slip of paper. Large signature, with the downstrokes of the final letter y's extending unusually far. TWO: Signature of 'Joe Daniels'. On 8 x 2 cm slip of paper. Contains typed valediction of letter: 'Yours truly, / One of the Drumming Fraternity. / [signed] Joe Daniels'. The slip with Daniels' signature has been laid down over the bottom 0.25 cm of the slip with Roy's, covering the bottom of the 2cm downstrokes of his letter y's, but not in an obtrusive way.

Signed in ink "Harry James" on the cover above a vignette of a band and a couple in evening dress dancing. There is a very light crease along the bottom edge of the card. V…ery good. Eastwood Gardens was a dance hall in Detroit, Michigan, which closed in 1953. The 1942 date of the signature is presumed because Harry James performed at "Michigan Theater" on August 28, 1942.On the two inner sides of the Eastwood card is a menu of beers, soft drinks, wines and champagne served there with prices. Their special Padre Sec California champagne is pictured on the 4th side with the price of their champagne cocktail.Harry James [1916-1983] was an American musician best known as a trumpet player and band leader who led a big band from 1939 to 1983. He was especially known among musicians for his remarkable technical proficiency and superior tone on the trumpet. He was extremely influential on up-and-coming trumpet players from the late 1930s to the 1940s.

This unusually well-preserved archive of a Roaring 20's Jazz Orchestra musician and Band Leader in the Pacific Northwest reveals the exuberance and business success of this largely forgotten artist through his successful years before foundering during the Great Depression. Both scrapbooks open with clippings, thank you and recommendation letters, as well as dance broadsides and photographs during 1926 at the height of Lyle Lewis's orchestra appreciation. Testimonials include B.J. Saad who owned the Garden Dancing Palace, and stated "I have taken the Garden, which is second to no other ballroom west of Chicago. That is why I have secured Lyle Lewis, recognized as one of the best orchestra leaders on the Coast." C.W. Craig of Lipman Wolfe & Co., department store extolls that Jazz music dance held at the Multnomah Hotel March 16, 1926 that "I don't think we have ever enjoyed better or more up to date dance music than that furnished by your splendid aggregation." Broadsides and notices advertise the Lewis Jazz Orchestra playing the Grand Ball Room at the Masonic Temple, Congress Hotel, leading McElroy's Oregonians at the McElroy's Spanish Ballroom, the Dessert Hotel Oasis near Spokane, parties for Studebaker and more. One of the mounted letters includes a rather sad severance letter signed by Cole McElroy explaining the circumstances of Lyle Lewis's leaving stating "I realise that you were a victim of circumstances. On account of the fact that you had a fine band organized. . . certain music masters of the theatre jobs saw fit to take your men away from you, thereby breaking up your fine band and forcing me to make a deal for another organization." McElroy (1888-1947) was known as "Pop" McElroy, was a popular band leader, who during the years before World War I, and after played the Palm Gardens often, and had grea.

Aggiungi al carrelloThe interview retitled 'Duke looks back and forward | in an interview with Les Tompkins' features on pp.6-7 of the April 1964 number of 'Crescendo'. (Sammy Davis Jr features on the cover, with the announcement 'NOT A WORD ABOUT THE BEATLES!') Three items, the typescript of the interview and two accompanying pieces (one not used)…. All three in good condition, lightly aged. ONE: Carbon typescript, titled 'That's where the tailoring comes in | Duke Ellington talks to Les Tomkins'. 6pp, 4to. On six leaves, stapled together at a corner. Of particular interest in this typescript is the following passage suppressed in the published version in which Ellington names Jimmy Forrest as one of his imitators: 'we've had people like Jimmy Forrest who took a couple of pages out of our book, wrote a number and called it something else. It became the biggest thing since "St. Louis Blues". And that's "Night Train" - you know, from "Happy Go Lucky Local"'. In a couple of instances the typescript appears closer to Ellington's voice than the published version. It features the Americanism 'specialty', rather than the published 'speciality'; and has the following passage which was recast for publication: '[] and as the refreshments would take over and he would roll of the piano stool why, they would call in the soda jerker [i.e. Ellington] to come and play the piano.' The published version reads: 'As the refreshments took over and he rolled off the piano stool, they'd call in the soda jerker to play the piano.' Other changes are relatively minor: 'Some people don't like to have to what is it? [] to follow something they are not familiar with' printed as 'Some people don't like to have to apply themselves. [] to follow something unfamiliar'; 'Then you don't have to worry about how many drinks you take' printed as 'Then they don't have to worry about how many drinks they take'; 'the English audience has' printed as 'the British audiences have'; 'is a thing which is rare' printed as 'is rare'. In the typescript the preamble to the article ends rather lamely, 'However, here are some of his interesting utterances about:', this is replaced in the printed version with 'But the printed words alone have their own value. L.T.' In addition the published version exhibits a few minor editorial changes, such as the correction of 'fit' to 'fitted' and 'less notes' to 'fewer notes'. The typescript has the following headings: 'His jazz beginnings', 'When he was a fixer', 'The men in the band', 'Billy Strayhorn', 'Their writing approach', 'Ellington imitators', 'His view of the present band' and 'His view of the future'. These are replaced in the published version by 'Smart', 'So loud!', 'Cutting', 'Renaissance' and 'Protection'. TWO: Carbon typescript headed: 'The Duke presents a bouquet to our audiences'. 1p, 4to. Published in a box at bottom left of first page of interview under the title 'An Ellington bouquet'. THREE: Carbon typescript of one-sentence quotation from Ellington, under title 'Duke Ellington's comments on Crescendo'. 1p, 4to. Reads: 'I think it's wonderful reading. And it's very exciting, thrilling interesting, mainly and enjoyable.' This endorsement does not appear to have been used by the magazine. The material comes from an archive of typescripts by Tomkins of his Crescendo contributions, including interviews with Louis Armstrong, Sonny Rollins, Bud Freeman, Stan Tracey, Erroll Garner, Stan Kenton, Quincy Jones, Joe Turner, Tubby Hayes, Stan Getz.
