Pris tour à tour par les Anglais et les Français, les protestants et les frondeurs, les Blancs e…t les Bleus, le château de Bressuire a été conquis une dernière fois par un savant doublé d'un artiste. Passionné par sa ville, Raymond Barbaud entreprit ses premières recherches au château de Bressuire en août 1886. "Je voulais non seulement faire un relevé irréprochable, mais encore tirer de mon travail une restitution absolument sérieuse, étudier ces vieilles murailles comme si je devais en entreprendre la restauration". Plusieurs équipes de terrassiers furent mobilisées sur le chantier de fouilles. En 1888, les archives furent entièrement dépouillées et les relevés sur le terrain achevés. Ces travaux dévoilèrent des vestiges ignorés. En 1890, la restitution, plans et dessins, était terminée. L'année suivante, Barbaud présenta ses découvertes et fut récompensé par la grande médaille des Monuments français. "Poussé par mes collaborateurs, je me décidai à entreprendre un ouvrage aussi complet que possible sur la vieille forteresse". Son livre comporte une étude générale de l'histoire des défenses qui ont précédé le château, et celle du château lui-même ; suivie d'une étude spéciale sur l'évolution du château au fil des siècles et sur les caractéristiques de ses défenses.
