Der Verfasser wünscht als Arzt, als Priester, als Kranker eine Botschaft zu vermitteln, die sich von den üblichen Darreichungen des Trostes an leidende Mitmenschen stark unterscheidet und ganz neue Dimensionen in der menschlichen und christlichen Existenzweis…e des kranken Menschen herauszustellen weiß. Die Krankheit wird als Mittel des Aufstiegs, das mit ihr gegebene Handikap" als Vehikel des Sieges verstanden, obwohl und gerade weil auch das Elend und die Schwäche, ja selbst die etwaige Revolte des Kranken nicht übersehen werden. Infolgedessen fehlt diesen Ansprachen jeder sentimentale Ton und Akzent. Sie verneinen ebenso das falsche Mitleid wie eine unfruchtbare Ergebenheit, vermögen aber gleichzeitig tiefer in das Leid hinabzusteigen und höhere menschliche Fähigkeiten und Kräfte heraufzuholen, als menschliche Erfahrung und sogar christliches Denken im allgemeinen zu tun wagen. Das ist umso erstaunlicher, als Dr. Barbe sich vor allem an jene wendet und von ihnen und mit ihnen spricht, die über längere Zeit oder gar für ihr ganzes Leben von der Krankheit gezeichnet sind. Dieses scheinbare Paradox schließt eine unerwartete Konsequenz ein. Diese Vorträge sind nämlich von einer Art, daß gerade auch der gesunde oder noch gesunde Mensch, sofern er christlich zu denken und zu handeln gewillt ist, unmittelbar betroffen wird, weil er mit ihnen in den entscheidenden Sinn der christlichen Passion hineingeführt wird, in dem der Große Angenagelte" und der Auferstandene" identisch ist.
