Posthumous Collection, containing Fairy Tales, Christmas Fragments. Hardcover Format. Michael Fairless was the pseudonym of Margaret Fairless Barber, a Christian inspirational writer of delicate sensibility, and even more delicate physical constitution. Her book "The Roadmender" was hugely popular, and was reprinted numerous times through the years. "The Grey Brethren" was a posthumous publication, issued in 1905. This is the First American Edition, issued by E. P. Dutton. It is a collection of fragments in verse and prose, including four fairy tales intended for juvenile audience. CONTENTS ** The Grey Brethren ** A Song of Low Degree ** A German Christmas Eve ** A Christmas Idyll ** The Manifestation ** All Souls' Day in A German Town ** By Rivers and Streams ** Spring ** A Lark's Song ** 'Luvly Miss' FOUR STORIES TOLD TO CHILDREN : ** The Dreadful Griffin ** The Discontented Daffodil ** The Fairy Fluffikins ** The Story of the Tinkle - Tinkle TITLE : The Grey Brethren and Other Fragments in Prose and Verse. AUTHOR : Michael Fairless (Pseudonym of Margaret Fairless Barber, 1869 - 1901) Margaret Barber, a Christian writer, was something of a mystic, and a lover of nature and all things natural, which give her works a special cadence, lifting them above the common everyday essay. Her inspirational book, "The Roadmender", was an immense success and very popular. She was also the author of a mystic romance titled "The Gathering of Brother Hilarius" IMPRINT : E. P. Dutton & Co. PLACE : New York DATE : 1905 EDITION : First American Edition PRINTER : Turnbull and Spears, Edinburgh, Scotland STATUS : OP - Out of Print PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Small trade hardcover; Contains a Preface; x + 147 pages; 4 1/2" x 6 5/8", dark blue cloth-covered boards, with silk title labels on spine and front board. Spine title label displays a bit of edge roughness and slight surface roughness - else the exterior is clean and unmarked. The top edge gilding is considerable rubbed, but clean; fore- and bottom text-block edges are toned , else clean. BINDING : The book's text-block, having been read more than once, is not as tight as when issued, the leaves opening widely and the whole being slightly shaken; however no leaves are detached or loose, the whole remaining fairly solid. INTERIOR : The end-papers are foxed; there is light scattered foxing and spotting throughout, as well as a few small smudges, but basically the interior is clean and presentable, with no writing or marginalia.
