Now, let me ask, why have not these learned Protes tants succeeded in establishing a union among themselves? In reply, I will just tell what I heard the other day from a very intelligent Protestant: "It is no wonder," he said, "that the Catholics are united, and that the Protestants are not. The reason is clear:it is impossible to preserve unity in the Church, whilst it has no centre, nor any living authority to decide without appeal in all disputed points. Now the Roman Catholics have this ce ntre and this living authority; whereas the Protestants are deprived of it. When Luther and Calvin turned their backs upon the Roman Catholic Church, they took with them the Bible,but not the centre of unity and the authority of the Church. Nay, the Reformation was based upon the entire rejection of this centre and this living authority, capable of deciding on controverted points; consequently, we have no means of preserving unity amongst us."' [1827, after the year of Jubilee], III. [1829, after Catholic emancipation] -- `16. Cecidit corona capitis nostri [Lamentations 5,16]. Yea it is fallen, because we have sinned, and in our iniquities have we lost all the splendour of our brightness: all the beauty of the daughter of Sion is faded. The vineyard once elect and favored of the Lord is turned into a wilderness. The wild boar from the woods hath come; the savage beast of the forest hath devoured it: yea, Luther, more furious than the beast of prey hath come; yea Calvin, more raging than hell, hath seized us; they have come, and they have devoured our inheritance O Lord. .' (p. 15) -- In 1841 John Henry Newman had written: `Rome must change first of all in her spirit. If they want to convert England, let them go barefooted into our manufacturing towns, let them preach to the people, like St Francis Xavier, let them be pelted and trampled on' (Letters and diaries VIII,42) -- Father Dominic (who in 1842/43 had sent a copy to Newman: Tract and pamphlet coll. 184), embodying this vision, `does not know of my intentions, but I shall ask of him admission into the one true Fold of the Redeemer. He has had little or nothing to do with conversions, but goes on missions among his own people.'
