Condizione: Good. Quarto (211×145mm), two works bound together. I: [10] leaves, 231; [1 errata] pages. II: [7] leaves; 106 pages, [1] errata leaf. Title-pages with engraved arms of Pope Urban VIII. Engraved headpieces and tailpieces throughout. Contemporary Roman black morocco binding by the Andreoli bindery: two concentric bord…ers separated by double fillets, the outer border with roll of stylised flowers and leafy branches and the broader, internal border with alternating triangular tools and with arabesque tools in the corners; alternating triangular tools on spine; central panel with four fan corner-pieces and the arms of Leone Strozzi (1637?1703), Bishop of Pistoia and Prato and, from 1700, Archbishop of Florence. In a modern box. Early annotations on endpapers, few spots. A very good copy from the library of Francesco Riccardi del Vernaccia (1794?1863), chamberlain of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinand III (ex-libris).Two rare collections of poetry by Pope Urban VIII, born Maffeo Barberini (1568?1644). The first collected edition of Barberini's poems was printed in Paris in 1621. Despite him being elected pope in 1623, "it took till 1631 before the first Roman edition appeared, with the Vatican Press. [. . .] In the same year, a smaller, and therefore supposedly cheaper but yet identical version was published by the press attached to the Apostolic Chamber; this, of course, was the press that usually catered to the people of Rome and of the Papal States and therefore could be instrumental in distributing the book to those teachers who expressed an interest in using it in their classes." (Rietbergen, p. 113) "In a papal brief titled Poesis probis et piis ornata documentis primaevo decori restituenda, that would precede the text of all subsequent Roman editions, he [. . .] maintained [. . .] that poetry should be restored to its pristine quality, turning its back on pagan themes and images and instead inciting to Christian virtues. Still, sometimes it might be necessary to use classical elements to direct the reader to biblical texts and their messages, or to moral examples. [. . .] Not only was the official Roman edition constantly re-issued, it also was constantly enlarged, as the Pope's poetic vein continued to flow. Indeed, almost each new edition contained additional, mostly Latin poems [. . .]. From 1635 onwards, the Roman editions of Urban's Latin poems mostly were followed by editions of his Italian verses as well [. . .]. The purpose of the poems now published was manifestly didactic, since most are provided with explanatory captions. All Urban's favourite themes recur: the moral education of the members of his family?various Latin poems for the Pope's brothers and nephews [. . .]?the cult of poverty, expressed in a sonnet [II, 69] on St. Francis, and the prayer- like meditations." (ibid., pp. 114, 115) "As the years went by, the number of printed editions of the papal poems increased. Obviously, the two main presses of Rome, that of the Vatican and of the Apostolic Chamber, re-issued their editions, quite probably on express papal orders but also because a genuine demand for them must have sprung up all over the Roman Catholic world." (ibid., p. 118) "Maffeo Barberini was born on April 5, 1568 as the youngest of the six sons of Antonio Barberini and Camilla Barbadori, who were citizens of Florence. Young Maffeo was first sent to school with the Florentine Jesuits and then, in 1584, moved to Rome to live under the tutelage of his uncle Francesco. In Rome, too, he was schooled in the humanistic curriculum of the Jesuits, in their famous Collegio Romano. Despite his obvious cultural interests, the career mapped out for a young man of his social background demanded that he go on to university to study for a law degree. This he did, at Pisa, where he spent several years. Though he wanted to marry, nothing came of the match arranged for him by his mother. Therefore he returned to Rome in 1588, to seek a career in the Church. With the in. Book.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 4to. pp. (xx) 231 (i). Roman letter, occasional Italic and Greek. Engraved arms of Maffeo Barberini to t-p; two engraved headpieces (David playing the harp and another surrounded by a floral branch with bees); four engraved tailpieces (two with sun surrounded by wreath with bees, two with rising sun…and motto 'ALIVSQ ET IDEM'); decorated woodcut initials and tailpieces. Light browning to outer margin of t-p and last, slight foxing, small faint water stain to upper margin of first few ll., very light browning to a few ll., wear to a couple of letters on one leaf. A very good, crisp, well-margined copy in contemporary Roman olive morocco, gilt to a triple-ruled panel design, small gilt rosettes to corners, outer border with gilt rhombus-shaped arabesques including small fleurons and central oval with a vertical row of small fleurons, centre panel with large gilt fleurons to each corner, edges sprinkled red. Spine in five compartments, gilt triple-ruled border and large gilt fleuron to each, minor rubbing at head, foot and joints. Bookplates of William O'Brien to front pastedown and Milltown Park S.J. Library to fly, 'C' and Milltown Park stamp to t-p, the odd early annotation. The beautifully gilt binding appears to borrow, with plainer intentions, the design and rhombus-shaped decorations on BL C108h12, produced c.1630s by the Rospigliosi bindery (i.e., Gregorio and Giovanni Andreoli) in Rome. Very good, crisp copy, in fine impression, of Maffeo Barberini's 'Poemata'. Born in Florence, Barberini (1568-1644) was educated by the Society of Jesus in Rome and earned a doctorate in law at Pisa. Thanks to his uncle, Pope Clement VIII, he was appointed papal legate at the French court. In 1623, he was elected Pope with the name of Urban VIII; during his pontificate, Galileo was called to Rome to disown his cosmological theories. A great patron of scholars and artists like Athanasius Kircher and Claude Lorraine, Barberini was himself a talented poet. First printed in Venice in 1628, 'Poemata' gathers his most important compositions in Latin and Greek, from biblical paraphrases to reflections on virtues and vices, poems addressed to scholarly friends and relatives, odes to saints and even musings elicited by the sight of beautiful statues. The collection blends the versatile erudition of late humanism, the jovial nature of 'alba amicorum' and the darker undertones of international politics. Three poems are devoted to the seminal studies on the 'marvels' of the animal and botanical world written by Ulisse Aldrovandi, 'guardian of Nature'. Another celebrates the saintly death of the Catholic Mary Queen of Scots, beheaded in 1587; the darkness which has covered the earth is lit up not by the burning torches at her funeral but by the stars in the heavens. 'De sole et ape' provides a key to the typographical iconography of the volume, decorated with shining suns and the bees of the Barberini. The explanation of the emblematic motifs is that bees' wax can survive the heat of fire, be used to make torches and, like the sun, can chase darkness away. This editionthe second to be printed by the 'Typographia Camerae Apostolicae' which had retained the privilege since 1631was advertised as revised and re-set with new and more elegant types. Only Harvard and BYU copies recorded in the US. BL STC It. C17, p. 927. Not in Brunet. L2705.

Oblong folio (390 x 280 mm). Latin manuscript on vellum. 1 p. With Urban's lead bulla attached on a hemp cord. Sewn together with four contemporary French legal documents in connection with the bull. Various formats. Together 10½ pp. on 11 ff. Highly interesting collection of legal documents, most importantly the Papal dispensat…ion of consanguinity to the 4th degree addressed to Jean-François de Gondi, Archbishop of Paris, for the marriage of Achille II de Harlay with Jeanne Marie de Bellièvre, including absolution for having stipulated the marriage before obtaining dispensation. The beautiful bull from the 16th year of Urban's pontificate (1623-44) is decorated with two initials on the plica and seven initials of the first line. - All attached documents are in relation to the marriage made possible by the dispensation: 1) the homologation of the Papal bull signed by Dionysius Le Blanc, episcopal official of Paris, dated 10 May 1639 (4to, Latin manuscript on vellum, 8 pp. on 6 ff.); 2) the "dispensation of the 3rd ban" issued on 20 October 1638 by the same official together with the permission to marry in the Bellièvre family chapel (oblong 4to, Latin manuscript on vellum, 1 p.); 3) a certificate of engagement and marriage issued on 15 May 1639 by the parish priest of Notre-Dame de Stains in the diocese of Paris, co-signed by the witnesses Balthasar de Rostaing, prior of Pommiers, Jean Cousin de La Roise, gentleman ordinary of the King's chamber, and Jean Roux de Lusson, Councillor to the King (folio, French manuscript on paper, ½ p. on 2 ff.); 4) a marriage certificate for Harlay and Bellièvre signed by Pierre Colombet, parish priest of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois in Paris, dated 24 October 1638 (folio, French manuscript on paper, 1 p. on 2 ff.). - Further added are an extract of the marriage contract from 20 October 1638 (folio, 1¼ pp.) and a sheaf of notarial copies of all above-mentioned documents but the bull (folio and oblong 4to, French and Latin manuscripts on paper, altogether 10 pp. on 11 ff., sewn). - The timeline is not entirely clear, but it seems that the marriage on 28 October 1638 had to be repeated on 15 May 1639 for lack of the homologation of the bull. The absolution for the "stipulation of the marriage" granted by Urban VIII is probably not connected to the legal marriage documents at hand. Achille II de Harlay (1606-71) and his spouse Jeanne Marie de Bellièvre (1617-57) were both members of important Parisian families of magistrates. Achille's like-named father served as 1st president of the Parliament of Paris from 1582 to 1611, while Achille II was Master of Requests and Conseiller d'État. Jeanne Marie's father Nicolas Bellièvre was président à mortier of the Parliament and later Conseiller d'État. - The bull is countersigned by members of the Apostolic Chancery. All documents with contemporary summaries in French. Some browning overall. The bull shows some abrasions but otherwise is in very good condition.
