Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. 1st Edition. The book, PARADOXICAL WOMEN: IRIGARAY, FEMININITY AND EUGENE O'NEIL deciphers the Feminist intervention, interrogating the nuances of understanding 'Women' and the 'paradoxical approaches' of Women by one of the most powerful of American playwrights. E…ugene O'Neill. Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic theorizing on the American Consciousness felt a sort of reluctance, if not an ardent admirer in the theatrical vision of the American playwright. Interestingly, Freud and Femininity was already an ingrained development in articles written between 1920 and 1930s. Gainful of the acceptance, it was wide enough to be taken as the last word on Femininity. With the entry of Jacques Lacan and his re-reading of Freud, Woman's Subjectivity and Sexuality were tied to Language and Culture. Feminist critics like Julia Kristeva, Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray critique Lacan disqualifying his symbolic realm on language relegating Woman to a marginal state of abandonment and dereliction. O'Neill's notable plays Desire under the Elms (1924), Strange Interlude (1926-27), Mourning Becomes Electra (1929-31) and Long Day's Journey into Night (1931-34) decode clear influences of the Freudian elaborations. Women characters from the Freudian plays of Eugene O'Neill are recognized as stereotypes. Recognizing the Irigarayan tenets of Psychoanalysis, as the book reveals, the symbolic subjectivity-thorugh stereotypes-rebel framework sysnthesizes a differing symbolic for Women. Through a reading of O'Neill's women characters through the tenets of Irigaray, this work adopts a flexibility to recreate the linguistic model for women by theorizing the vital concerns of his Women characters in registering their Protest against the Women(less) World. Offering the requisite gendered space for the operatives of literary language, this reading attempts to decode the symbolic and the American cultural realm of critical enquiry.

The problematic of reading women in the context of violence is very complicated. Studying violence or theorising violence might be an impossibility, but at the same time, studying violence through the question of woman and her body, woman minus her body and the discourse of woman as a singular entity, just as a human being is possible. It cannot be denied that woman is often refused her status of being looked at as simple as a human being minus all other identities or social conditions. One tends to wonder about what methodologies could justify the woman question with respect to violence. Is there a methodology at all? One even wishes that a complication of concepts such as liberation, emancipation or empowerment vis-à-vis a woman be addressed on a linear scale. We call these keywords as concepts as they are far removed from practical reality. Is a woman ever liberated or emancipated or even empowered? Does the discourse of domesticity or body not touch the so-called empowered woman? Is she ever received as a singular entity of just being a human'? The need is to examine a woman's life on a wider scale by employing inclusive framework, to bring normality into focus by refuting the stereotypes of womanhood. This becomes more problematic when it is read on an extended concern with violence. The discourse is reduced to body alone. How do we attempt to read the woman, in this context, beyond its dimensions of body? This book is an attempt to read womanhood as humanhood. The articulation, self or otherwise, is through the context of violence. The experiences are those of the subje.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This work is a gendered reading of Sahgal as a writer of fiction and looks at events in post-Independence India from a gendered perspective. As a tangent, it has also discussed the reliability of fiction as a source material for history…. The debate and dichotomy between fiction and history are an important part of the book also. Through its attention to the detail of minor events, Sahgal's way of writing was better at highlighting the social aspects than the greater moments of history. It is essentially a picture of India and the many faces of India through not only its women but also through the relationship shared between men and women and the societies in which they lived in. Be it religion or politics, these men and women had something to say. They critiqued it, compared it, compromised, and negotiated with the changes that were affecting their beliefs from one political scenario and ideology to another. Through them we see a country emerge from a country in shackles to a country fighting its restraints and prejudices and accepted notions and ideologies to make itself felt in the outside world. It had its fair share of problems inside too, and the many characters created by Sahgal wade through it, sifting the best in India to emerge with an identity. There are larger forces at work and Sahgal's world is a country in transition and her characters probe India. There are questions of morality, faith, gods, attitudes, ambitions, hopes, and also despairs.
