On 6 x 9.5 cm slip of paper, cut from the letter. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. On one side, with part of the franking postmark in red ink, Baring has addressed the letter in the customary fashion: 'Thetford December ten 1834 | F. T. Maxon Esqr | 6 Little Friday St | Cheapside | London | Frans Baring'. (The recipient is the solicitor Frederick Thomas Maxon.) The reverse of the slip carries part of the conclusion of the letter, with the top half of Barker's signature. The subject matter is appropriate: '[] & have it [] be no erasure or [] [t]he frank will hardly [] the old, but the [] with the latter. However [] by the Twopenny-Po[st] [] tomorrow-night. [] [bes]t wishes attend you [] | Most truly yours | E. H. Barker [signature cut in half horizontally, with only top half present]'.…

Merchant and merchant banker (1740-1810). 3 pages, 16mo. In very good condition. He is unwilling to produce his title to the property, the request, in connection with the purchase of a neighbouring property from an individual named Bonar, having 'something else in view'. He encloses [not present] 'a plan of the premises, in all about 2 1/2 acres by which you may perceive it would be convenient for the purchaser of Bonars, to pick a hole in my title'. He gives a brief description of 'three seperate [sic], but contiguous tenements, all fronting the road'. He 'should be glad to know the name of the Sollicitor [sic] which might lead to some discovery. - perhaps it would be right for you (in my absence) to wait on Bonar as at my request, to explain to him the impropriety, for I feel very much averse to produce the writings indeed nothing but necessity will compel me to it [.] You will find Bonar extremely liberal & obliging.' In a postscript he asks his correspondent to 'look in at The India house on Wednesday & hear what is said about the curious correspondence'. Signed 'F Baring'.…

The card bears the following pencil note (concerning another lost item), in a Victorian hand: 'This is not an autograph. / But it is a most amusing & interesting letter and so finds a place in this book / F H A'. Baring's letter, to an unnamed recipient, reads: 'My dear Sir / I will thank you for an answer to the following questions as to the number of days each voyage will require. - / From Jamaica to Vera Cruz / Vera cruz to Jamaica / Jamaica to Havannah / Havannah to Jamaica / But if you cannot procure the information untill [sic] after Thursday, you will be so good as to reserve it for my return. As I leave this place on Saturday before the letters of Friday from London can be delivered. / Your most hearty faithfull / F Baring'.…
