Hardcover. Condizione: Like New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Like New. 1st Printing: 1999. 296 pp. An excellent, spotlessly clean copy and dust jacket! Clean, fresh, sharp, tight, essentially flawless copy and dust jacket with crisp pages, clean text, and very light shelf wear. Synopsis: Larry Mungin spent his life preparing to succeed in the white world. He looked away from racial inequality and hostility, believing that he'd succeed if he worked hard and played by the rules. He rose from a Queens housing project to Harvard College and Law School, and went on to the world of corporate law. But just when he should have been considered for partnership at his mostly white law firm, he sued for racial discrimination. Paul M. Barrett, Mungin's roommate at Harvard, takes readers through this fascinating case while challenging them to re-think their ideas about race. Mary E. O'Boyle (Jacket Design); Terry Ashe (Front Jacket Photo); Konstantin, NYC (Author Photo) (illustratore).…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. xiv, 290 pages. Map. Source Notes. Bibliography. Index. Signed and dated by the author on the title page. Paul Barrett is the deputy director of the Center for Business and Human Rights at New York University's Stern School of Business. He joined the Center in September 2017 after working for more than three decades as a journalist and author focusing on the intersection of business, law, and society. He worked for 12 years for Bloomberg Businessweek magazine, where he served at various times as the editor of an award-winning investigative team and a writer covering topics such as energy and the environment, military procurement, and the civilian firearm industry. From 1986 to 2005, he wrote for The Wall Street Journal, serving as the newspaper's Supreme Court corespondent and as special projects editor. Paul is the author of four critically acclaimed nonfiction books, the most recent of which are GLOCK: The Rise of America's Gun and THE LAW OF THE JUNGLE: The $19 Billion Legal Battle Over Oil in the Rain Forest and the Lawyer Who'd Stop at Nothing to Win. Paul has focused primarily on researching and writing a series of reports on the role and obligations of the social media industry in a democracy. Specific topics have included the problems of disinformation, the consequences of outsourced content moderation, the debate over the liability of social media platforms for harmful content, and how Congress could enhance the Federal Trade Commission's consumer protection authority to regulate social media companies. Paul has a J.D. from Harvard Law School. From the dust jacket: The gripping story of one American lawyer's obsessive crusade-waged at any cost-against Big Oil on behalf of the poor farmers and indigenous tribes of the Amazon rainforest. Steven Donziger, a self-styled social activist and Harvard educated lawyer, signed on to a budding class action lawsuit against multinational Texaco (which later merged with Chevron to become the third-largest corporation in America). The suit sought reparations for the Ecuadorian peasants and tribes people whose lives were affected by decades of oil production near their villages and fields. During twenty years of legal hostilities in federal courts in Manhattan and remote provincial tribunals in the Ecuadorian jungle, Donziger and Chevron's lawyers followed fierce no-holds-barred rules. Donziger, a larger-than-life, loud-mouthed showman, proved himself a master orchestrator of the media, Hollywood, and public opinion. He cajoled and coerced Ecuadorian judges on the theory that his noble ends justified any means of persuasion. And in the end, he won an unlikely victory, a $19 billion judgment against Chevon--the biggest environmental damages award in history. But the company refused to surrender or compromise. Instead, Chevron targeted Donziger personally, and its counter-attack revealed damning evidence of his politicking and manipulation of evidence. Suddenly the verdict, and decades of Donziger's single-minded pursuit of the case, began to unravel. Written with the texture and flair of the best narrative nonfiction, Law of the Jungle is an unputdownable story in which there are countless victims, a vast region of ruined rivers and polluted rainforest, but very few heroes.
