The lapidary collection of the Museum of Saint Sophia constitutes a priceless patrimony of sculpted marbles; though little known, it deserves of complete and systematic study. This guidebook is conceived as a useful companion devoted to the scientific divulgation of this important collection of sculptures of the city of Istanbul. Each marble sculpture, pleasantly arranged in the blooming garden in front of Saint Sophia, represents a significant "tessera" in the mosaic of the Late Antique and Byzantine city. This book offers all visitors to the Museum the opportunity to become more acquainted with these "marble treasures", treasures so frequently disregarded as a result of the overshadowing magnificence of the Justinianic building.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: New. 359 pages : illustrations ; 28 cm. German and Italian. 'After more than 90 years since the first catalogue by Bartolomeo Nogara was published, this volume in German only, with three contributions in Italian proposes to revive the study of the ancient mosaics preserved inside the Vatican Museums. The artistic value and the topographic importance of mosaics are revealed by a thorough examination of several finds, based on a meticulous research carried out from Vatican and Italian archives, including the Vatican Secret Archives and the Rome State Archives. The vicissitudes of the mosaics are related in detail: their discovery during the excavations in the 18th and 19th centuries in the territories of Latium, the identification of the modern artists who adapted them to new uses, the restoration work, as well as the complex procedures of removal and transport up to the current location. The essays are enriched with articulated descriptions of the portrayed subjects, with particular interest for the analysis of the recurring themes, such as mythology, astronomy, flora and fauna, scenes of daily life, as well as geometric and decorative motifs. Among the exhibits, the Mosaic of the Minerva, unique for its divine-astronomic content; the famous Mosaic of the Masks, with mythological and bucolic scenes; the Octagonal Mosaic with marine figures and scenes kept at the Round Hall of the Vatican Museums.'.
