This monograph, the first full-length English study of the compilation, aims to bring it to a wider audience, analysing the Middle Dutch work and comparing it to French narrative cycles, Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur, and Ulrich Fuetrer's Buch der Abenteuer. The book consists of five chapters.

Alle bijdragen trachten geheel in de traditie van dit zwaargewicht binnen de Middelnederlandse letterkunde relatief gewaagde hypotheses te toetsen aan de werkelijkheid, en maken gebruik van andere disciplines als de antropologie en interculturele communicatie. De bundel vormt een mooi, wetenschappelijk verantwoord geheel. Wel zijn niet alle artikelen even aantrekkelijk, en zijn sommige auteurs te ver gegaan in hun 'avontuurlijk lezen'. Wanneer de onderzoeker na de bewijsvoering moet toegeven dat ze absoluut niet sluitend is om zijn standpunt te staven, levert dat toch een anticlimax voor de lezer. Niettemin is deze bundel zeker de moeite waard voor wie een een veelzijdig beeld op de Middelnederlandse literatuur wil krijgen. Het vergt wel enige inspanning om alle studies volledig te vatten.
