En raison de son exhaustivité et de son organisation cohérente, le De proprietatibus rerum s'affirme, pendant le XIIIe et le XVe siècle, comme un des principaux recueils encyclopédiques ; son succès se mesure au grand nombre de manuscrits (environ 200), de traductions en langue vernaculaire (en anglo-normand, en italien, en français, en provençal, en anglais, en espagnol, en néerlandais), et d'éditions imprimées (environ 50 entre 1470 et 1609). Alors que l'intérêt des médiévistes pour l'encyclopédie de Barthélemy l'Anglais n'a cessé de croître durant les dernières décennies, et que le De proprietatibus rerum constitue une source privilégiée pour un grand nombre de disciplines, le texte originel ne restait accessible qu'à travers les anciennes éditions imprimées. Un projet éditorial international impliquant 24 chercheurs et coordonné à Münster, Louvain-La-Neuve et Orléans a dès lors mis en chantier l'édition du texte latin et de sa traduction française par Jean Corbechon, datée de 1372. Ce premier volume offre l'introduction générale, qui présente l'uvre de Barthélemy et son contexte, sa diffusion manuscrite et sa postérité, décrit les manuscrits sélectionnés et énonce les principes éditoriaux suivis. Vient ensuite l'édition latine du prologue de Barthélemy et des livres I à IV, qui sont consacrés successivement à Dieu (I), aux anges (II), à l'âme humaine et à ses facultés (III), aux éléments et à leurs qualités, ainsi qu'aux humeurs du corps humain (IV).
